Reasons to Love Living in Carlsbad CA
~ The Arts - Part 2 ~
In Part 1 of this 3-part series on the Arts in Carlsbad we talked about theater and film/outdoor movies.
In Part 2 we’ll focus on music in all its various forms in Carlsbad.
The arts are just one of multiple reasons to love living in Carlsbad or visiting. And there are lots of popular options where music is concerned. The following is just a sampling of the music options throughout the year in Carlsbad.
MUSIC
TGIF CONCERTS IN THE PARKS
The TGIF Concerts offer a variety of different live bands, performing on consecutive Fridays each Summer in 4 of Carlsbad’s beautiful community parks. While in recent years there were more concerts each Summer, in 2023 there were 6 concerts.
What a great way to spend several hours in a beautiful park on a summer evening with a couple thousand people, enjoying an al fresco dinner, great music and dancing if you are inspired.
The TGIF Concerts are free and usually pretty crowded. Because of the raffles that are held during intermission (with great prizes), the TGIF Concerts are a leading resource of funding for the arts programs in Carlsbad that we all enjoy.
MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC
If you love music in general, then the Museum of Making Music (MOMM) in Carlsbad is a real treat. There is an amazing history of music, archives, instrument displays, and interactive exhibits. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours there. But that’s not all the MOMM offers.
The MOMM also has concerts throughout the year offering a wide range of performances and amazing talent – local, regional and even international. And tickets are very affordable. The venue is fairly small, and seats often sell out. Here’s the Late Summer/Fall schedule of performers. Tickets are typically in the $25 - $35 range.
We went to see the well-known Brazilian composer/singer/guitarist Chico Pinheiro a few years ago and he was amazing. Here's a short video.
OTHER MUSIC OPTIONS
There are musical performances at the New Village Arts Center in the Village and occasionally at the Schulman Auditorium at the Dove Library complex. We attended a wonderful International Guitar Night at the Schulman some years ago.
You also find free music throughout the year at multiple venues, especially during the holiday season in Carlsbad Village. This includes performances at the Courtyard at the Carlsbad Village Faire Shopping Center, and at the various arts and crafts fairs (more on those in Part 3 of this series).
Do you enjoy the bar scene or a restaurant with music? Carlsbad has plenty of those options, too.
The Coyote Bar and Grill at the Carlsbad Village Faire is well known for its live music. Le Papagayo Restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive also offers live bands and great food, too. Chandlers Restaurant at Cape Rey (the Hilton) on the Coast Road is another option with some views of the ocean, as is the Black Rail Kitchen and Bar in the La Costa area at the Paseo Real Shopping Center.
There is also live music at The Landings at the Carlsbad Palomar Airport, at the Witch Creek Winery in the Village, at Hennessey’s Tavern in the Village, in the bar area at the Park Hyatt Hotel Aviara…the list goes on.
You’ll find plenty of other dining+music options on-line.
Stay tuned for Part 3 where we’ll talk about the visual arts in Carlsbad – art fairs, galleries and public art.
This is the 2nd of 3 posts submitted for the September 2023 Challenge co-hosted by Dr. Paula McDonald and Kathy Streib.
