Read the Lines

The alarm flashed across my phone from one of those news consolidation sites that you sign up for without even knowing. "300% increase in hoarding!!!" That caught my attention.

So I tried to read the lines. I used to be a professional researcher, I can find ANYTHING. There is no documented 300% rise in hoarding disorder. Catherine Thorbecke's online ABC News article from March 4, 2020 9:06AM Americans hoarding hand sanitizer, face masks and oat milk amid coronavirus fears details a 300% increase in oat milk sales in one February week. The history of hand sanitizer—how the coronavirus staple went from mechanic shops to consumer shelves Sat, Mar 28 2020 9:31 AM EDT by Tom Huddleston Jr. cites a 300% increase in hand sanitizer sales from February 2019 to February 2020.

But no 300% increase in hoarding. Which is a good thing. People are stronger than we fear.

Not so fast, there are always lines when there's a rumor of a TP shortage.

Lauren Williams, CPO, CVPO  not a hoarder, instead I like to have two or three of everything and when we drop to two I start looking to replace, hence we are never out of anything that I am responsible for, wine, food, paper supplies and water to name a few:)Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. You and me both! I think the even more important lesson this time is "Question what you read." How in the world a "300% increase in hand sanitizer purchases" mutated to a "300% increasing in hoarding" is beyond me. Lauren

That's terrible that statistics like that are just thrown out without any backup data. Terrible but not at all surprising.

Kat Palmiotti AGREED!!! I think it's the internet version of the kids' game "Telephone." Really makes you cautious if you're at all sensible. Lauren
