THROWBACK Thursday - Ephesus Turkey

Reblogger Ray Henson
Real Estate Agent with Retired

When I saw that Sheri Sperry - MCNE® had been to Ephesus I just had to share her post.  Of the Seven Churches of Revelation that we visited, Ephesus is the one that has been rebuilt most extensively.  The theater above used to be at the water's edge.  Could you imagine watching a show when it was originally built?  It must have been surreal.

The last post of my series following our trip through Turkey will be a summary of the Seven Churches of Revelation, so this is just a small tidbit to whet your appetite.  One of our pictures is much like Sheri's, though.  I think it is mandatory that we all have to take a picture of the Library at Ephesus.  It is really cool!

Ephesus

Our Lady of Ephesus Turkey - Holy Water

In 2007. Rick retired from a 35+ year career at UPS.  We planned two major vacations, one for our birthdays in Winter and one for our 35th Wedding anniversary in Summer.  I picked the summer excursion.  It included a stay in Rome, a 10-day Mediterranian cruise, and a final four days in Venice.

Kusadasi Turkey - 2007

Kusadasi Turkey

One of our stops was in Kusadasi, Turkey.  We signed up for a tour of Ephesus, which included a little shopping and a tour of the last home of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Ruins at Ephesus

The Home of the Virgin Mary

The Last Home of the Virgin Mary

The House of the Virgin Mary was rediscovered in 1891.   You can read about the rediscovery at the link.  This is believed to be the last home of her earthly life.  Mary was brought here by Saint John the Apostle, who was one of the first disciples of John the Baptist.

Sheri At House of Virgin Mary

This part of the tour was self-guided, but it was fascinating to see this history.  Many Popes have made Papal visits to this location.  It is revered by Muslims and Christians alike.  The site was elevated to the status of a "Holy Place" made permanent by Pope John XXIII.

Drinking Fountain and Holy Water

I wasn't expecting...

When we went to the ruins at Ephesus, we had some idea of what we would see and learn.  But that was not the case at Our Lady of Ephesus home.

September 8th is the Virgin Mary's Birthday.

After we came in by tour bus, many tour buses followed.  We couldn't understand why it was so busy.  We discovered that the day we visited was the birthday of the Virgin Mary.  Her birthday is September 8th!

There was also a spring that went under her house.  It has been said that there are healing powers from the fountain's waters (above).  We bought a few small bottles to fill with this holy water and gave them as gifts.  I kept one bottle; the water is still pure 16 years later.

Holy Water

Church scholars say there are much better indications that Mary's permanent house was in Jerusalem.  All I know for sure... This is a very special place, and I was happy that we could make it there to see it.

I would love to visit Ephesus - My husband went when he was a teen aged Marine - but I suspect that the Marine Corps didn't include a lot of sightseeing.

It was a very interesting site, Lise Howe, with long Roman streets, shrines, a section of homes from the period, mosaics, painted art on the walls and even some kid's graffiti.  I think it was the most interesting site that we visited on our trip.

Thank you, Kristin Johnston - REALTOR®.  I hope you have a great week and I appreciate you taking the time to stop by.  😃

We really thought the same thing, faye schubert.  I think the Ephesus site was the the best of the best that we were able to visit.

Good morning, Endre Barath, Jr. I have started traveling to these far away places later in my years, so we are enjoying the time.  We still have so many places to go and time seems to be getting short. In retrospect, a few years in the military would have been good experience for me.  I hope you were able to enjoy the countries you visited during your career even though you had important responsibilities.

Hi, Joan Cox!  Sheri visited a few places that we did not, so it was fun learning new things from her post.

Thank you, Brian England!  I think you would have been a little disappointed in my if I had not included in some way.  😃  They never played pickleball in Ephesus, so you would have fit right in.  Interestingly, we did see a very early backgammon game in Ephesus.  When I finish my Turkey series, I will include a photo of it.  I read a book called, Backgammon for Blood, when I was in college.  I wonder if the Romans really did play it for blood?  Ha!

Oh, I've never traveled to Ephesus (or anywhere in Turkey) - YET, Ray! That is definitely on my bucket list. My BFF once visited there on a mission trip and said it was one of the most beautiful places she visited. My brother was in the USAF and stationed there and also said it is beautiful countryside.

Great post to re-blog!
