Motivation Stimulates Action

Food is a great source of motivation for both man and beast alike.

Real Estate was far from my first occupation and I hate to admit it but Real Estate ranked pretty low on my motivational scale. That being said even lower was my attempt to follow in my dad's footsteps as a Life Insurance agent. I did find some motivational inspiration however when my dad gave me a book by Joe Gandolfo, the only life insurance agent to sell a billion dollars of life insurance in a single year (and that was back in the 60's). His book was The Thrill Of Selling.

Believe it or not one of the most motivational jobs I had was working at a surplus hardware store (now a small chain) named Mac's. At that time Mac's worked with several Hutterite communities who paid with beef and chicken for their purchases. Mac's would use the meat to motivate us to sell more hardware and receive bonuses in beef and chicken. In addition to our regular pay it was not unusual to receive 20 lbs of beef as a bonus.

Then again there is MONEY

My favorite occupation was the most financial rewarding and like Mac's they had bonuses of both cash and "things" you could pick out of a catalog. That company was United Church Directories and I'd still be with them today had they not sold out to a horrible company (in my opinion) called LifeTouch. UCD was a national company and had several competitors. I was consistently one of the top three agents nationally and I earned a lot of money because I loved the job and the rewards.

In both cases stated above I found my motivation in the bonuses. This was also true with another early career selling stereo equipment. Bonuses were stereo equipment and something new to me at the time... spiffs. Spiffs were cash right out of the till for selling certain products (instant gratification).

In ending:

Speaking of "food" as inspiration and a bonus it is only fitting that I end this post with an explanation of John 6:53. When Jesus said what he said in John 6:53 - 58 many of his followers left him because they didn't understand and were freaked out by what he said. What he was saying was that we must totally consume him for total understanding and eternal life. You can not top the bonus of eternal like with God and that is why I consume Him every day.

If someone has to be bribed to do something, it likely isn't the right thing to be done, haha.

Good morning Bob. Growing up with my father in the frame and body shop business, cash played a big role in getting things done. I was never a fan but the "spiff" produced big results in those days. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, Bob... I've never been motivated by selling. Selling for me is a by-product of helping people... and I manage to make a good amount of money from it... which is motivating to me. It's a just reward for hard work.

Brian England the products were good but largely unknown. This was the manufactures way to get sales people to try it themselves and spread the word. During my four years of stereo sales I never had a customer come back with a complaint so I saw it as a win, win.

The spiff worked good in the stereo business Wayne Martin and I appreciated it. I am sure it can be misused and I suspect that it is in the pharmaceutical business. I say this because I had a friend who had a sales job with them right out of High School and he had more cool stuff given him then I'd seen in a Sharper Image catalog.

Perfectly said Nina Hollander, Broker and that is how it should be. My morning scripture today was how a sluggard will live in poverty but a hard worker will be rewarded with riches.

Knowledge is great faye schubert but as the Bible says knowledge without the wisdom of how to use it is useless. I have met many people full of knowledge who were idiots at understanding how to apply that knowledge.

Good morning Bob,

There are always incentives or bribes offered but when a person finds an occupation  they are passionate it does not feel like a job but a calling.

Finding what works is less like a job and more of a motivating factor, Bob. I enjoy real estate, it sure beats working for someone who hands your self-worth disguised as a pay check every other week. Happy Friday to you!

Bob I had to dig hard to think of a 'job' I didn't really like.  Maybe a few while going to college - were just ok but somehow I managed to make them enjoyable.  I pretty much have always been the leader so it's been a fun ride for me all along.

I agree Dorie Dillard Austin TX . I had found my passion 30 years ago but the company I worked for sold out to a horrible company that ran it into the ground.

Your parents taught you well Will Hamm . I should have checked out more career choices when I was young and then gone for what fit the best.

That is cool Anna "Banana" Kruchten . I have liked most of the jobs I've had as well but I've always been to independent to work for someone else.
