Friday Fun…What Room Gets Your Attention?

It’s Friday so time for some fun. When I look at a home to buy, the kitchen is where I head.

While I stand in the kitchen, I imagine myself preparing a meal there. I take in the countertops and cabinets. The layout of the work zones is essential as well, and of course, I want to know where and how large the pantry is.

Years ago, a co-worker who did not cook, headed straight to the Master Bathroom when she searched for her new home.

Larry, on the other hand, passes through the kitchen but besides looking at the structure (retired builder) he focuses on the garage. How many cars and his “toys” will it hold?

So for some Friday Fun…when you’re looking at a home to buy or to list, what’s the first room you head to and why??

Good morning Kathy,

I definitely head to the kitchen and make sure it is open to the family room so when everyone is over we are all together. I look at the floorplan and master bed/bath to see if it's to my liking!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I agree. I need to see how open it is. I can always replace old appliances!!!   But it's harder to knock down walls! LOL

Kathy Streib Very good question! I do cook and the kitchen is important to me but I also think the main bedroom is essential as closet space is so important.

Hannah Williams what's funny is that I rarely look at the secondary rooms.

Kathy, I too look for a great kitchen, amount of storage and the pantry, but 2nd is the master bathroom.   This home has an awesome storage system in the garage.

Joan Cox my favorite kitchen ever had a lot of cabinets but also a butler's pantry. I loved it!!!!

The kitchen is very important for Chef Dolores and the family room is where we spend a lot of time. We are also accustomed to a very nice home office.

Roy Kelley when Larry and I looked years ago, we wanted a 3 or 4 bedroom because we knew we would have to turn one into an office. Things have changed now and newer homes have offices.

My sense is the type of home and how the home sits on the property. Usually the kitchen but sometimes I gravitate to the great room and even the primary suite.

Very interesting Leanne Smith I suppose that would be really important if you were purchasing raw land.

A kitchen is definitely the gathering place for many people. We redid ours many years ago to reflect a light, bright space and I love cooking and creating there, Kathy!

I head towards the view room which is generally in my area the living room.  I love to see what kind view, mountains, golf course, landscaping, pool, patios the home has....especially if I'm looking for us.  Kitchen would be second and important as well. I always knew I could remodel a kitchen if I didn't like it or it wasn't functional.  Now I don't feel like doing that anymore - that takes too long!!

Kathy for me it is always the kitchen that gets my attention first, second is the bathrooms, and the third is not a room, but walk-in closets are also high on my list.

I pay attention to the kitchen most.  But, I also am interested in the layout of the house, how it flows.

Kathy Streib  I look at the layout and the potential, now Diane looks at the overall feel and look to a home... we compromise on the location and that trumps over everything else, Endre

p.s.: I have cooked in Boston in a kitchen that was a converted closet.... I also cooked in a larger kitchen with a great eating area.... but if you know how to cook it does not matter how ostentatious the kitchen is, Endre

Hmm, I am fairly easy to please and don't necessarily care more about one room over another, but the overall layout is what I focus on the most.

Hi Kathy:

It's always interesting to see what buyers focus on in this searches, and it varies so much.

For me, it's the kitchen - so many memories are built around life in the kitchen, especially with friends and family.
