Reasons to Love Living in Carlsbad CA

~ The Arts Part 3 ~

The arts are just one of many reasons to love living in Carlsbad CA.

In Part 1 of this series on the arts in Carlsbad we talked about theater and film including outdoor movies. Part 2 focused on the abundant music offerings in Carlsbad.

Part 3 is about the visual arts, including galleries, art fairs, wall murals, sculpture and more.

Visual art in Carlsbad covers a wide range of public art such as sculpture and wall murals scattered around town, among other things. Here’s a link to an interactive site that shows where public art is located in the town. Just keep your eyes open, especially in the Village and you are sure to spot murals, painted utility boxes and fire hydrants, and more.

The Carlsbad Art Wall is well known for its changing murals several times a year. I think I have seen them all since the Art Wall was founded in 2015 by Carlsbad artist Bryan Snyder. Here’s the August 2023 art wall mural with links to several prior murals. You’ll find the #CarlsbadArtWall on the east-facing wall of Senor Grubby’s Mexican Restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive, just past the train tracks as you head to the beach.

So far 37 murals have graced this wall since its inception in 2015.

Another wall mural offering, also founded by Bryan Snyder in 2022, is the Carlsbad Art Alley Wall at 550 Grand Avenue in the Village.

If you walk around Carlsbad Village you are sure to spot many other wall murals (e.g., at Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard at Witch Creek Winery). Some of these have been in place for years.

If you enjoy sculpture you’ll appreciate a visit to the free Carlsbad Sculpture Garden, with changing exhibits during the year (because of the complexity of installation and other issues the shows typically last for a number of months).

Former Carlsbad Sculpture Garden exhibit

The Sculpture Garden is just east of the Village and the 5 Freeway, and adjacent to the Georgina Cole Library at 2955 Elmwood. The Sculpture Garden is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm and is free. Here is the current exhibit, “Geometric Garden.” This exhibit is open until August 30, 2024.

You might want to check out the cool sculpture at the round-a-bout at the north end of State Street where it meets the Coast Road (Carlsbad Boulevard) as you head to Oceanside. It’s lit up at night and fun to see.

There are a couple of cool sculptures at the Carlsbad Safety Training Center that also houses a fire station and the police department.

The Walter D. Cannon Art Gallery is city-owned and located at the Dove Library complex in the La Costa area at 1775 Dove Lane off El Camino Real. The Cannon Gallery is for display only – there are no sales - but the Gallery offers multiple shows during the year each with an opening reception. Some of these are traveling exhibits with a national reputation. Admission is free!

If you are interested in glass art, then Barrio Glassworks in Carlsbad Village is well worth a visit. You can walk in and watch glassblowing and tour their amazing glass retail gift shop (below) and exhibit room. You can also take glassblowing classes if you’re inspired.

There are plenty of private art galleries, too, including the Front Porch Gallery and the North Coastal Art Gallery (formerly the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League or COAL) in the Village. The Foundry Artist Studio is at the New Village Arts complex on State Street.  Wander around the Village a bit and you’ll find plenty of other galleries.

And don’t limit yourself to the Village - you’ll find other galleries outside the downtown area, too.

If you enjoy outdoor art fairs, Carlsbad has 4 each year that may be of interest.

The Carlsbad Village Street Faire, one of the country’s largest 1-day outdoor arts and craft fairs with around 800 vendors takes place in May each year. There is also a repeat of this fair in November in plenty of time for holiday shopping. This year is the 39th annual fair. You find plenty of food and live music, too.

Carlsbad art fair

The Art in the Village fair takes place in late spring or early summer each year. The date varies but the 25th fair took place in 2023 on June 25th with about 100 local and regional artists. You’ll find performance art, interactive demonstrations, and live music.

Lastly, ArtWalk Carlsbad takes place every September on Armada Drive above the Flower Fields. There are food trucks and booths plus live music performances on 2 stages in a beautiful setting with ocean views and breezes.

This is the 3rd of 3 posts submitted for the September 2023 Challenge co-hosted by Dr. Paula McDonald and Kathy Streib.

I plan to continue this series and share other reasons for loving Carlsbad – restaurants, recreation, shopping, dining, tourist attractions, sports and athletic events, housing, and of course the beaches. Stay tuned!

Good morning, Jeff... truly an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the arts in Carlsbad. I was "waiting' for you to write about your murals. Loved that sculpture of the policeman and fireman. Do you have any idea how Carlsbad compares to other cities/towns of comparable size in terms of what it offers? It must be at the top.

I think that the visual is more up my alley and I really like the first mural that you shared.  I would love to hear the story behind it or just stare at it and come up with my own story for it, haha.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker

Great question, but I don't know how Carlsbad compares to similarly-sized cities/towns. My sense is there is a lot here compared to other towns I am familiar with. Laguna Beach up in Orange County is a smaller town but is known for its art galleries and art events. In any case there is plenty to offer residents and visitors here in Carlsbad if the arts are of interest.

Hi Brian England

The 1st mural was painted by Bryan Snyder, a Carlsbad artist and founder of the Carlsbad Art Wall. The "dripping boy" is, I believe, intended as a reflection of Bryan's memories of his childhood at the beach, and he has used similar images in his works for years.

Jeff, this is fascinating information about the visual arts in Carlsbad. I have a feeling you may have seen my friend's beautiful glass and wood garden installations at the Carlsbad Art Walk in September. I think photos can be seen at this tag:   #prismaticgardenglass

I certainly did see them - they were most impressive. ArtWalk Carlsbad was, once again, an amazing collection of artists this year!
