Things to Do in Addison This Fall - Part 2

October is national Fire Safety month.

In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire raged for 3 days over the period of time between October 8th through the 10th. One theory is that Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in the barn and that's what started the fire.  It destroyed approximately 3.3 square miles (just slightly larger than the Town of Addison) and killed over 300 people.

National Fire Prevention Week (the week starting October 9th) was founded in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association and the organization later expanded their fire prevention efforts to encompass the whole month of October.

Every year in Addison, the fire fighters of the Addison Fire Department will come to your home and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors if you cannot. They bring the batteries and the ladders. If you can change the batteries yourself, you can pick up free batteries at either fire station. Fire Station #1 is located across from the the Addison Police Department, 4798 Airport Parkway. Fire Station #2 is next to the Addison Athletic Club, 3950 Beltway Drive.

You do have to schedule an appointment to get this in-home service.

Addison Fire Prevention

The theme for this year's fire safety program is "Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire safety". Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicates that 74% of all fire deaths in America happen in the home. And the number of fire fatalities has risen. There are more deaths in 2023 compared to 1980.

Stay safe, Addison residents! Either register for an appointment for the fire fighters to come and replace your batteries, or pick up some batteries at the fire station and replace them yourself. Think about getting a carbon monoxide detector, too!

Addison seems like a great place to go pumpkin picking an apple picking, and to the farmers market. I know that’s not grammatically, correct but I didn’t want to say “farmers marketing,,” somethings just sound a little silly  .
