Atlanta Buckhead Midtown and More -
Community Gardens Around Town - 1
Atlanta, Buckhead, Midtown and many more sections of the City of Atlanta offer surprising glimpses of small town enterprises. Who would think that so many Community Gardens exist inside the urban area!
Let's review the top blue "x" marking on the map in this post. In the area Atlantans call Northeast, the Blue Heron Nature Preserve offers a mix of public and private governance. The dense car-focused vista is now planted with grasses and herbaceous plants - shall we go so far as to say wild flowers? - and recreating a meadow. Meadows, known in the South as Prairies, consist of low foliage and not trees. Small animals live in the grasses and among the plants.
Along the side of Roswell Road, a heavily built-up area with major power lines, one may now walk trails festooned with color and fragrance. The Founders stated:
Our goal was to create a pollinator-friendly ecosystem for butterflies, especially the endangered monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). Pollinators are especially important to Georgia agriculture, but they affect the overall health of our ecosystems as well.
Thanks to a partnership since 2006 with the City of Atlanta and Park Pride, adding permission from Georgia Power to use the land underneath power lines, an Urban Meadow Ecosystem exists at The Blue Heron Preserve. Educational programs and many activities abound at the Preserve. ...............................................Plant name is "Ironwood"
The Community Garden offers 30+ plots for use. The largest plot, dedicated to growing vegetables, supplies food to St. Luke's Crossroads Kitchen, a Church-based volunteer effort feeding unhoused people in Midtown.
Spend a wonderful morning or afternoon at The Blue Heron Sanctuary. Enjoy free parking to visit the free walking trails - open every day from Dawn to Dusk. Lots to learn when visiting Blue Heron Sanctuary. Check Map Link to plan. Then go and explore the beauty for yourself!
