2023 TEXAS REALTORS® SHAPING TEXAS CONFERENCE, SAN ANTONIO, SEPTEMBER 7-10 had the power to fix my attention on timely issues, education, and fascinating networking opportunities from Leadership, Staff, Brokers, Attorneys, Appraisers, REALTORS®, and outstanding Texas REALTOR® Instructors. The Conference was well attended with enjoyable packed full days with Speakers and Committee Members.

Colour Guards

The opening session began with the traditional, highly prestigious military colour guard, assigned with the duty for protection of the national flag followed by Speaker, Admiral William H. McRaven, USN (Retired). Texas meetings always begins with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Texas Pledge of Allegiance: "Honor the Texas Flag; one state, under God, one and indivisible."

The theme for Admiral William H. McRaven revolved around courage. It all begins with a soldier's first lesson, their daily ritual to "Make your bed." Although simple to do, many soldiers failed, and had to learn the hard way how important it is to stay disciplined and do the first task each day with perfection. He reminded us how important it is to make the bed, because after having a miserable day, at least you'll come back to a made bed.

Admiral William H. McRaven's 10 Seal Rules

1) Make your bed - you'll sleep better.

2) Find someone to help you paddle. Changing the world on your own is not possible. You need a support Team to help cheer you on.

3 ) Measure a person by the size of their heart, not their flippers' size, because it is what's inside that matters most.

4) Keep moving. The universe doesn't recognize your efforts. Never lose hope. Keep pushing forward.

5) Situations will wear you down - they make you stronger. Don't be afraid of the circuses.

6) Even in the hardest situations, you must take a risk and face your problems head on!

7) Don't back down from the sharks. They are merely obstacles. The only way to win is don't back down.

8) Stay hopeful during your darkest hours. After the darkness there can only be light.

9) If you think you are up to your neck in mud, sing! Be the person who motivates others to carry on with hope during the most difficult times in your life.

10) Giving up is not an option. Always concentrate on winning.

In sum, the annual Texas Conference is the best way to utilize your time to shape up, manage your time, and spend valuable time learning how to leverage your time.

Hello Patricia - it sounds like this was another successful meeting for you.  And it also seems to me, that many lessons of life are quite simple yet may be difficult to follow.  Those reasons may or may not be complicated and that is another discussion.  Earning a takeaway message is a prize for those who are present in the moment.

Making our beds is undertaken every morning after our first cup of coffee. His points are all valid. I remember the quote of Henry Ford "If you think you can or you think you cannot, either way you are correct." Sounds like an exceptional conference. I did not know Texas had its own pledge.

Good morning Patricia,

It certainly sounds like a successful meeting and can tell you are Now a raving fan. My Geno always made our bed the very first thing before having his coffee. I still do it today!

I first heard of the Admiral after a speech he gave at the Naval Academy. He is a sailor's, sailor and I would have been proud to serve under his command.🙂

My wife saw the admiral speak once via video.  We now have to make our bed every, single morning!  I kind of wish he would change that first rule.  Ha!

Michael Jacobs - your comments are always appreciated. I am a firm believer in continuous education. I just wrote an educational post for Tuesday, 9/19 that may be of particular interest to you on an American Tragedy sixty years ago (not real estate related).

Take-aways are like my Aunt and Uncle's surprise packages they hung from the ceiling for kids to choose in their old little mom & pop grocery/candy store when I was a child.

May you have a wonderful day.

Leanne Smith - I was quickly introduced to the Texas Pledge after moving to TX on March 27, 1997. I can't think of one business meeting I attended since my introduction to TX twenty-six years ago that our pledges were recited. Even when I was President of Toastmasters, every single meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the Texas Flag. It is a nice, professional way to begin any meeting.

As for making the bed, I learned how important it was to start each day by making my bed the day after my husband and I got back from our Honeymoon. He was just back, honorly discharged from the Army, coming home from Vietnam. 37 years after his passing, and I still make my bed after I get up each morning.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - I also make my bed every morning (see comment to Leanne above). It is a good habit I can't break. Even when my spouse was alive, I made the bed. And there were other habits I learned because of his military background. Nobody teaches discipline harder than anyone associated with the military.

I wouldn't dream of missing a TX REALTOR Conference. This year's conference was in my opinion the best!

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - Admiral McRaven is an Admiral to look up to. Discipline and Common Courtesy are skills everyone should learn and never forget.

With your Military background, I can understand why you admire him too.

I hope you have a day filled with hope and joy.

George Souto - Truthfully, I get so much more than what I pay for the cost to attend the TX REALTOR Conference. There is so much positive energy that is free flowing each time I go. I wouldn't miss it for anything.

I hope you have a very enjoyable day and I pray your wife is doing well.
