Moving Tip #5…Packed And Ready to Go….Now What?
PREPARE YOUR LAST ON/FIRST OFF BOX
This is the box that will go on the truck last because it is the first box you will need when you move into your new home.
Moving Tip #5…Packed And Ready to Go….Now What?
This is the 5th tip to help you have a smooth move. The first four covered how to begin; using your camera to assist your memory; how to edit your treasures; and tips for packing.
At this point, you’re packed and ready to go…or are you???!!!
In a few days, you’ll be moving. If you’re using a moving company or even if you have enlisted friends to help, there are last-minute tasks that will make moving day go smoothly.
ORGANIZE THE ITEMS TO BE MOVED
Go through each room and make sure that each box is correctly labeled.
This is important…set aside a corner of your house for items that you DO NOT want placed in the moving van. Make the movers aware of this.
This could include personal items, documents, clothing, etc. -items you will take in the car with you.
Movers or friends are there to move your boxes into the truck. They don’t have time to wonder if it is to be moved or not. They will pick up whatever is in the room and it’s going in the truck!
HAVE EMPTY BOXES AND TAPE LEFT BEHIND FOR LAST-MINUTE ITEMS
If you’re staying in your home the night before your move, there are items you’ll need but also want packed for the movers. You can throw your bed linens, towels, etc. in these boxes.
MAKE SURE THAT THESE ITEMS ARE LEFT BEHIND
Garage door openers
Extra keys for the house, including special keys
Instructions for appliances
Remotes for fans, etc
And…if you want to be exceptionally nice, leave…
Information on garbage days
Phone numbers for local services
Take out menus
Special tips for “quirks” in the house. For example, in every home we’ve lived in, there has been one light switch that we couldn’t figure out.
PREPARE YOUR LAST ON/FIRST OFF BOX
This is the box that will go on the truck last because it is the first box you will need when you move into your new home.
It can include items such as:
A knife (for opening boxes)
Paper towels and cleaners
Tissues
Coffeemaker and coffee
Paper plates, napkins, utensils
Toilet paper and hand soap
Light bulbs
Trash bags
Tools
First Aid Kit
Towels- bath, hand, and kitchen
Flashlights
Bed linens
Extra device chargers.
Your clearly labeled plastic bag or box containing cables, wires, etc. for your televisions, etc.
LEAVE YOUR HOUSE AS YOU WOULD WANT TO FIND IT
No matter when you finally leave your house, make sure that it is left as you hope to find your new home.
Consult your agent as to what is usual and/or required in your area.
Hire a cleaning service to come in when the movers leave.
EXTRA TIPS
Feed your movers…order pizza or sandwiches, and have bottled water. Ask them when they arrive what they would like.
Know where your furniture and items will go in your new
house.
As the movers are bringing in your belongings you will need to know where you want them to go. They’re not moving that bed or heavy chest more than once!
Make a floorplan to help you remember and for anyone helping you.
Enlist help…movers will come in and work quickly. It helps to have an extra pair of eyes and hands.
Take photos…if there is damage to your house or items caused by your movers, it needs to be documented. This is another to have an extra set of eyes.
Follow these tips to help you have a smooth move!!!
The more you plan ahead the less stressful your move will be.
