Fall in the Desert - Saving Energy, too!

Ahh, cool mornings are upon us in the desert!  This is the time of year when we take a collective sigh and start to spend more time outside.  The season starts to change, albeit slowly.  But the morning temperatures are now in the low 70's.  With low humidity, this is a welcome break from summer heat!

There are also some chores to be done!  Filtering/limiting the sun on south and west facing windows is key to stopping heat gain during hot summer months.  But it's dusty in the desert.

As temperatures drop, our air conditioners don't turn on at night since it's cooler outside at night.  You should see a drop in your electric bill.  But there are some things you can do to further reduce your energy bill.

When the daytime temperatures drop as well, it's time to remove those sunscreens and store them in the garage for another season.  Before you do, wash them with slightly soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and pat them dry to remove old dust and grime.  Make sure the screws are stable in the sunscreens to be easily used for next summer.

Washing windows can be made a whole lot easier with micro-fiber cloths and a weak vinegar mixture.   It's also a good time to check for any cracks and leaks in your windows.

In the winter months, the sunshine will add a lot of bright sunlight and a little heat to the interior of homes.    Unless you have low-e windows of course!

In the winter months, temperatures are very moderate in Arizona, but with less humidity than other climates.   So, allowing sunlight to shine through is a great way to save energy by utilizing the sun's rays for warmth instead of turning on a furnace.

No matter what state you reside or climate zone, take advantage of nature's sunlight to help heat your home in winter months!  This post is the 3rd in a series for September on sustainability!

Let the sunshine - it's that time of year again!   Enjoy the fall season!

Hi Jan many people don't think of the simple things you can do to make your home more energy efficient in the Phoenix area. I am so looking forward to saying adios to sunscreens (most of them) for the winter and letting that sun shine in.  It does get 'too bright' in our living room from the wall of windows we have so we do leave the upper ones on. But....they sure need a cleaning along with the low e windows!!

Great advice.  Happy Fall!

Featured in BananaTUDE!  Yeah!!  It's fall, take a ride with the top down!

Jan Green - Scottsdale, AZ  I love Fall, and yes it is great we have not had the A/C on now going on five days... late afternoon evening temps drop to the mid to high 60's and gratefully daytime only reach mid to low 70's. I always loved Fall when we lived on the East Coast due to the foliage and the temps.... and here because of the temps...Endre

Good morning, Jan... fall and spring are the two seasons I get to open up my windows in the early mornings and air out my house. Actually, I do that in winter as well now that I'm thinking about it.

I so understand Endre Barath, Jr. !  It's wonderful to let fresh air inside your homes.  Did you know that our homes can have very unhealthy indoor air quality!  This is the time of year when we fix that!  Kudos!

We currently have all of our 17 windows and 3 sliding glass doors professionally washed every six months. During the fall season at night we open the house (when it is cool) and then shut it up in the morning when the house temps are under 75 degrees.  Due to the block construction, we only turn on the AC around 3-4pm and then it runs for just several hours.

Those are the advantages of living in a different climate zone in Arizona Leanne Smith !  You're doing a great job of using the temperature changes to your advantage.  In the green world, we call that super cooling at the right times of the day.   Good for you!
