Day Trips from Phoenix Metro(1): Bisbee

We love living in the Phoenix Metro area for many reasons - the people, the opportunities, the arts and culture, the weather 9 months of the year and so much more. We like to take spontaneous trips, without planning too much ahead, and there are many destinations nearby to head to in the morning and come back in the evening, feeling refreshed.

We like Nature walks, the outdoors, art, music, roses, gardening, connecting with people with like interests. So, when we arrive at a destination, we tend to look for those things.

The drive from Tempe AZ to Bisbee is about 3 hours on Interstate 10 and then on the picturesque route 80. We loved the scenery, and the sparse traffic on route 80 - it had been a while since we saw few cars on the road.

We had not read much about the city on purpose - we like to discover things when we arrive. I only knew that we had bought a violin online from a seller here, so I had expectations of seeing string musicians here.

First impression from the road were pleasing - pretty brick homes perched on red hills with sparse but contrasting green vegetation. Architecture in unison with Nature - red brick, green wood.

I had already read on my phone - Bisbee was a mining town in the past, and now it is a historic city which has attracted many artists, galleries, musicians, fashion designers, gourmet food stores and tourists.

We drove along the main street about half a mile until we found a parking spot in the shade, parked (free parking) and started our walk down the main street.

Bisbee - main street, September 2023

We strolled down the main street, stopped at various pretty stores, had pleasant conversations with store assistants and owners - they were very generous with their time to talk to us, to share history of the place and current events. For a person who is not into shopping, in just half an hour I was carrying three bags. I was surprised at the quality of items I saw and didn't want to pass.

Gallery Belleza tempted with beautiful European and desert paintings. The photo with the snow can be seen in the PanTerra Gallery.

Gallery Belleza, Bisbee - September, 2023

We talked briefly to a cello musician performing on a grassy area by the post office and the Western Bank buildings, and checked the live performances at a venue nearby. We learned that in the beginning of November is when the Music Festival Sidepony Express is happening.

Music on a Friday afternoon in Bisbee - September, 2023

I felt like I wanted to enter the post office building and mail myself a card from here. I stopped and read the sign about a historic event which had happened here.

And, of course, we checked the ARMLS for what the real estate market looks like here. If you are curious, you can see what is for sale in Bisbee by clicking on this link.

This is the first of a series of posts, named: Day trips from Metro Phoenix, as a participation in the challenge hosted by Dr. Paula McDonald and Kathy Streib.

Great article Steffy. I love Bisbee also both old and new and not far from Sierra Vista which has most shopping that one needs. Jeff

Hello Steffy - although I have never visited, I have heard of Bisbee.  This is another indication to me that we can discover much without going far or spending lots of time/resources.   Sometimes much can be found just beyond the "limits" where we live.

I agree, Michael Jacobs , we can find so many places of interest very close to where we live.

Those are neat pictures of Bisbee, Steffy.  That second shot reminds me a lot of a couple California Gold Rush towns, near my home.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat , we took similar trips to some of the California Gold Rush towns, when we lived in Pleasant Hill, CA. They did remind us of this city, too. Thank you for the Feature in the Photos group!

Hmm, I didn't realize the drive was only 3 hours.  I don't think I have ever been to Bisbee.  If I have, it was a very long time ago.  So many cool places to visit in Arizona!

Hi Brian England , we thought so, too. The trip turned out quite easy, even on Interstate 10, with one 15 min exception on the way back.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. , thanks for your comment. The photo with the snow is by a photographer, Charles Feil, for sale in their boutique on Main street. Maybe I should post the photo below, so that people don't think that it actually snowed when we visited in September. Local people mentioned that it snows about 3 times a year. This is high desert, so it does get snow, I believe.

Hi, Steffy Hristova -  Great blog about Bisbee.  I still have not made it down there or to the Tucson area.  It reminds me a lot of Jerome, AZ. It is a long drive for us.  We have to plan Southern AZ for a vacation getaway.
