When it comes to finding the right real estate agent, word of mouth is gold. There are lots of agents to chose from. I have not researched the exact numbers lately but there were more agents than active listings earlier this year.
Experience does matter in this business. I really would interview several agents before you make the decision to either buy or sell a property.
Local knowledge is also very important, so I would recommend an agent who has lived in the area of interest for more than a few months. .
