San Mateo, CA: What happens at the IRS if there is a government shutdown?
The IRS announced today they have contingency plans should the government experience a shutdown this weekend as Congress continues to struggle to pass a budget.
The IRS plan includes:
- Close all call centers; NO CALLS TO THE IRS WILL BE ANSWERED
- Close all Taxpayer Assistance Centers where taxpayers can make an in-person appointment to get tax matters addressed
- Stop all non-automated refunds to taxpayers
- Stop processing taxpayer transcripts
- Stop opening and responding to mailed correspondence
- Cease audits, unless the statute of limitations may lapse
BUT---SURPRISE! The IRS will ensure that tax payments are processed during the shutdown.
These are the changes forecast for the first 5 days of a government shutdown. The IRS will reevaluate these and additional contingencies if the shutdown exceeds 5 days.
This coming at the time when 2022 tax returns on extension are due on 10/16/23 should add to the chaos. Stay tuned.
