THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

u 2004: SpaceShipOne achieves the first private manned spaceflight Oct. 4.

u 1998: On Oct. 7, the U.S. government files an antitrust suit against Visa and Mastercard.

u 1990: On Oct. 3, East Germany and West Germany reunify back into Germany.

u 1967: On Oct. 2, Thurgood Marshall becomes the first Black Supreme Court Justice.

u 1957: On Oct. 4, the Soviet Union launches Sputnik I, the first manmade satellite.

u 1915: Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado is established Oct. 4.

u 1903: On Oct. 1, the Boston Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates play Game 1 of the first World Series.

u 1877: After a 1,000-mile retreat, Chief Joseph surrenders to the U.S. Army Oct. 5.
