My First Memorable Mortgage Experience

This month Dr. Paula McDonald and Kathy Streib are hosting the September ActiveRain Challenge titled "Let's Get Serious About Writing a Blog Series."  Through my 17 plus years of writing blogs on ActiveRain I have written many series of blogs.  My most notable series of blogs is one I write yearly on the progression of the Fall Colors here in Connecticut.  However, this months challenge only requires a series of 3 blogs, so I have decided to write about my three most favorite mortgage experiences as a Loan Originator.

The first favorite mortgage experience I have chosen is the very first mortgage I did as a Loan Originator.  This transaction was a special experience for many reasons, and an experience I will never forget.  When I became a Loan Originator I had to go through an initial training which lasted a month before I was allowed to take a mortgage application.  While I was in training a friend of mine, whom I watched grow up into an exceptional young man, and now father of three special kids to me and my wife,  approached me.  He told me that once I was out of training he wanted to refinance his house.  I asked him if he was planning to do some additional work to the house, consolidate some bills, or was he just simply looking to lower his interest rate?  He told me NO, he did not want to refinance for any of those reasons.

So naturally my next question was "then why do you want to refinance?"  His response was one that took me by surprise, and one I will never forget.  He stated "we have been friends since I was a young teenager.  You have watched me grow up.  You were there for my father when he needed someone to encourage him.  Now I want to do something for you, I want to be the one you do your first mortgage with."  I did not know what to say except "thank you, and I am honored that you feel that way."

The rest of the time I was going through training, I looked forward to doing his refinance, and wanted to do the very best job I could putting it together.  Luckily for me it was not only my first loan, but it was probably one of the smoothest loan I have ever done.  It was a great start to a career I truly have enjoyed each and everyday since then.

I have done many more loans since this one that were also very special, including refinancing this friend again into a lower interest rate, but there is none that I will remember more clearly, or with more satisfaction then this Loan.  This loan was the perfect way to start off my career as a Loan Originator.

Among the very first transactions I did as a Realtor, was for a 21 year old guy, who believe it or not, owned his own business.  He wanted to buy a duplex.  My preferred lender wouldn't touch him, primarily because he was considered self-employed.  I also suspect age may have played a part.  So, what did this 21 year old kid do?  He went out and found his own lender, who picked up the loan package from the previous lender, and then he funded it.  By, the way, that kid is now more than 40 years older.  I have sold him several homes over the years.  His business grew, and became very successful.  And, HIS lender went on to be my preferred lender for a number of years.

George Souto - yours was a touching story. It reminded me of my first listing from a neighbor three doors down. Because she knew I was new in the business, I asked why me? She said the same thing, she wanted to be first listing for my successful new career.

I can truly relate!

What an amazing young man. He did not have any real financial reason to refinance but he wanted to be there for you. Heartwarming.

George Souto you made me think about one of my first mortgages for my own home.  I was living out of a hotel due to relocating to the Washington, DC area and my personal belongings were already in storage.  The lender wanted additional details on my 401k and retirement accounts which I couldn't provide easily since my records were in storage.  I asked "Don't I qualify without those assets?" They wanted them anyway so I just changed lenders and did my very first "Streamlined" loan.

George- that was one of the most touching posts I've ever read. How kind and thoughtful of this young man and it also says a lot about what he thought of you!
