Preston Castle Halloween Haunt - 2023

By
Real Estate Agent

On a pleasant drive, in the Greater Sacramento region is a mysterious place in nearby Ione.

We really can’t say Preston Castle comes “alive” this time of year, because many folks claim ghosts of the dead remain there still.

The purpose for building the Castle was to accommodate the Preston School of Industry (reform school), in an attempt to rehabilitate juvenile offenders.  The Castle was completed in June 1894, and in 1960 the Castle closed, when a new building was constructed. Preston Castle is a California State Historic Landmark.

The castle’s sandstone was quarried a few miles from Ione, and the bricks were created at Folsom and San Quentin prisons.  The cornerstone was set with pomp and ceremony, in late 1890. The Castle is now empty, with some action being made to restore it.

As a trivia footnote to the Castle's history - it was used as the setting for a 2005 movie flick titled, "Bloodthirst 2: Revenge of the Chupacabras"  - It was written and directed by Sacramento's own news personality, Jonathan Mumm.   A friend, Bruce Shaw, played the leading role of Detective Steve Andrews.

With that history now under your belt, that this time of year Preston Castle comes ALIVE with the Haunted Dead at “Preston Castle Halloween Haunt.”  I am certain if you find ghoulish joy in such activities, you will not want to miss this opportunity.

Preston Castle is located at:

Preston Castle
999 (end of) Palm Drive
Ione, California

Ione is along Highway 16, approximately 45 minute drive South East of Downtown Sacramento.

This event is promoted as Northern California's only REAL Haunted House!  Yet, I can attest to at least one or two others). . . But this one is pretty amazing!

Tickets are limited for each night, so order early to make sure you can get in.

Hi Myrl,

I am still laughing at the first line of your blog.  It is funny and so true!  Haha. Visiting Preston Castle sounds like a lot of fun or should I say fright!

Good morning Myrl,

I would find it really fun to visit the Preston Castle! A very imposing structure that would be so fun to visit anytime but especially at Halloween!

I would love to visit Preston Castle, but I think I will pass on Bloodthirst 2!  I don't even know what Chupacabras are, but they sound like they are mad and are not going to be taking any prisoners! 😳

Hello Myrl - an interesting slice of history.  Movie and reform school-wise.

As a native Californian I have heard of Ione but can't recall ever visiting.  I am also unlikely to pinpoint it on a state map.   Although I enjoyed the clever connection you took with your post I am not much of a fan of slasher films, Halloween or reform schools.  The building looks impressive and maybe worth a visit under different circumstances.

Good morning, Myrl... can't remember the last time I heard the term "reform school." But I grew up knowing what that meant. Do you think there are any more reform schools left? As for the castle, I'm not big on haunted houses, but I could go for their Christmas event.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I haven't been to Preston Castle for the Halloween Haunt.  However, many years ago, when I was a teenager, I went there as part of a church choir, to sing during one of their church services.  It even had a spooky feel to it then.

John Pusa - Those I know, who have attended this event in the past, say it was really fun.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX  - I think kids would really like it as part of their Halloween activities.

Ray Henson - Chupacabras certainly don't look very cuddly.

Kathy Streib - I know when I was younger, I thought it was thrilling to attend to these kinds of events.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - Ione where Preston Castle is, is about 30 to 40 minutes away.  Those who have made the journey for this event, say it was worth the drive.

Michael Jacobs - Like you, I have found I like calmer activities to entertain myself in my old age.

Nina Hollander, Broker - You're right.  The term, "Reform School," has been shoved into the dustbin of history.
