PDA vs. Smartphone

Although neither my Palm m515 nor my cell phone are really at the end of their life spans, I have been thinking of either replacing the existing Palm with the Palm T|X, with WIFI capabilities or a Treo Smartphone (Palm platform). Has anyone tried both and found one better than the other? The advantages I see to the separate PDA are:

  1. Larger screen
  2. WIFI is usually free
  3. You can use the PDA while talking on the phone
  4. If you break or lose one thing, you still have the other.

I've never had a smartphone, so I can't comment. One thing I like about my current cell phone is that it is trimode, which means it will work anywhere on a digital or analog network. Verizon (my provider) says that all the analog networks will go away soon, but I still have occassion to get an analog signal. I know the Treo is pure digital.

Numbers 3 and 4 are decisive for me: the PDA is there for reference, and since most of my business is on the phone, it's like shooting myself in the foot for it not to be available during calls.

Arnold. I agree. I prefer to have two separate devices, but it almost looks like the Palm is going away. For instance Circuit City has them on their site for a great price, but you can't pick them up in stores, or with the E2 or TX they won't ship either. So, really you can't get it from them. They are available from Palm directly or Amazon, but they seem to be getting scarce. I think because people are moving toward the smartphone, which I don't find to be as good a solution.

I love my Cingular 8125 except one little thing. I sometimes when not using my bluetooth. I bump the hold button with my ear and and then quickly got to fumble to find the hold button again.

Other than that I haven't had any complaints. The new version of the phone has DSL speeds on the internet from what I understand. I guess that would be nice, especially when reading e-mails.
