THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

♦ 2010: Chilean miners are rescued Oct. 13 after 69 days underground. All 33 survive.

♦ 1997: Singer John Denver dies Oct. 12, crashing his plane into Monterey Bay.

♦ 1994: On Oct. 12, the Magellan probe completes a four-year project mapping Venus.

♦ 1989: On Oct. 9, Soviet news agency TASS reports aliens in the city of Voronezh.

1983: The first U.S. cellular network launches Oct. 12 in Chicago.

1983: On Oct. 11, customers in Bryant Pond, ME, switch from operator to direct dial service.

1975: The first episode of "Saturday Night Live" airs Oct. 11 with host George Carlin.

Hi Dorie... John Denver was one of my favorite singers, so I remember well the day they announced his plane crashed. A big loss to the music world. I never saw the first Saturday Night Live... and it's a shame as George Carlin is my favorite comedian. At least, I got to see him live in Las Vegas before he died.

Hi Dorie- I do remember when John Denver crashed his plane. And I think I have the movie about the miners saved in my streaming queue. And I am stunned that Bryant Pond, ME didn't get direct dial until 1983.

Oh, the one that jumped out at me was the year John Denver's plane went down, Dorie! Talk about broken-hearted! As an aside, his song, Country Roads, was my mother's favorite song. We played it as the background music for the video we shared at her celebration of life. I'm not sure what made me cry more - hearing her favorite song play or seeing the photos and videos of her!

Funny but, WV has been doing a TON of advertising locally for the past several months. Now, I hear that song and it's on my mind all day long!

You made me recall my many years in real estate before we had cell phones. We had a tower behind the office and used car radios and pagers. Then, we had CB radios as well.
