Be About Excellence - Be The Kind Of Leader That You Would Folllow

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Real Estate AZ Broker BR030809000

As a high school boarding school kid, one of my teachers taught us  'Be About Excellence' was her main goal for each one of her students.  At the time I didn't understood what that really meant - but over a year's time I knew exactly what she meant. To this day I am thankful to her for teaching me one of the best lessons ever! Be About Excellence.

I had to make a deal before my sophomore year with my Dad that 'if I didn't take 'typing' that I had to take sewing for a year. Yuck! But I sure wasn't going to take home economics, so I agreed to his deal. You see,  I planned on being a boss not a secretary. My Dad used to take me to his office to let me play office while he was working. I saw him building big projects all over the country and talking to a lot of people on the phone. He was the boss.  I wanted to be like him some day!

Be of Excellence...

How on earth did a year of sewing teach me about Be of Excellence? She started us on sewing simple things. It quickly advanced to plaids  and making sure every stripe matched - and I mean everything matched perfectly!! She made us do it over and over  and over until it was perfect.  Within a few months I begin to see how beautiful the clothes were and how fun it was to create them and wear them too. Over and over for a whole year, as  the projects got more and more complicated I looked forward to taking them on and hopefully had very few errors.  But I knew if I did make some mistakes -  I'd have to do it over!  Be About Excellence in everything you do Anna.  I can still hear her saying this to me!  I loved that teacher.  She was very sweet and very stern at the same time.

Be About Excellence is how I built my real estate business from the early years. I listened and learned from my broker and other agents and followed their lead.  I used to dream of having 5+ years of experience under my belt - because then I'd have a good working knowledge of real estate transactions and working with people. Little did I know that things would continually keep changing and at times there were really big changes!  I learned to adapt, shift and move on - always looking for better ways to build my business and Be About Excellence.

There has been a lot of talk going on within the real estate industry about possible changes coming and it's making some agents nervous and not sure of what to expect.  And if there is one thing I want to share it that now is the time to....

Be Of Excellence in every single aspect of your business. It will take you through any shifts and changes ahead of us.  Trust that.  And feel free to reach out to other more experienced agents and brokers ,They have so much they can share with you - if you're open to listening and learning.

We have many experienced professionals within the ActiveRain Community and within the BananaTude Group  that are more than willing to share their knowledge and experience with each other and you!

Join us in whatever changes lie ahead  of us and we can all Be About Excellence together!

Love Mr Crappy's wise words Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist !  Please thank him for the feature 😃

You lucky duck being able to take drafting!  I would have voted for that class in a heartbeat!  No such thing taught like that back in those days. Pretty amazing that your Mom as a Master Seamstress.  My Mom couldn't stitch a row if she had too. Just me. But she did encourage me. Hey you can darn a sock - ahead of me girlfriend!

It is interesting to think about 'back then. on occasion and remember those teachers that made a huge difference in our lives.  So agree Excellence is the way to go!

Exactly Ed (Edward) Silva, 203-206-0754 do it right the first time!  If people would do it right the first time they'd save a lot of time and frustration for all involved.  I've certainly worked with agents, such as the one you mentioned, and it is a learning curve for awhile for them.  Sometimes they just don't ask their broker for assistance.....which seems silly to me. And then the co-op agent is stuck teaching.

Good luck on your contract going smoothly from here Ed.

Hi Anna,
Well, look at you now. You can type too!

I took typing in school AND had a sewing section in Home Ec, but that's not where I really learned about excellence in sewing. I did that through 4-H. I can relate to the matching EVERY stripe (and check). You know the story, and it involves a lot of excellence. If I'm not going to strive for excellence in whatever I do, I don't see the point.

Anna that teacher may have seen tough at the time, but she taught you a priceless lesson in preparing you for success.

LOL funny Carol Williams !  Gary read this post and said - just when did I learn to type?  Not in college - I had a lady type all my papers for me!  When I got into computers I knew I had to type so I did and off I went.  I didn't want to be a secretary - which is where they used to peg gals back then!  No!

I knew you had learned to sew early on and that you would understand what I'm talking about.  And I also know you won a national award for your dress that was quite complicated - and at a young age!! You were ahead of me.  I was more into sports.

I'm the same way  - why bother starting anything if you're not going to be about excellence!   And YES ActiveRain is a brain trust and thank goodness for that all these years!!!

I was totally into sports too, Anna "Banana" Kruchten . That has always been my true passion! Volleyball, softball, basketball, and finally took up golf when I was about 20 or 21.

Yes you were!  And still are Carol Williams !  Same here - I used to say I'd be a pro golfer if I could do it all over!  Alas.....I love where life led me as I know you are as well.  Enjoy your weekend!

Hi George Souto I was really fortunate to have most of my teachers in HS like her. We  were all told me that we must excel in academics and sports.  Which was unusual back then.  All Catholic Nuns - except for the Basketball Coach.  Franciscan's which are a happy group of nuns that were always singing.  Pretty cool really.

Well said, Anna!  I learned through many mistakes made when I was a kid that it takes more time to correct a mistake you made than to do it right the first time.

Hi Kathy Streib isn't that the truth.......way easier to do it right the first time!  I have to laugh thinking about that as somehow for awhile we thought we could take short cuts.  I've noticed that quite a bit this past few years with the younger set.  It's as if - so you don't think I'll notice if you don't do......whatever.  Hmmm.

OMG loved your post and I made many deals with my dad.... Took Typing during the summer instead of regular classes.... took earth science during the summer and no I did not take sewing:) Instead I went one summer to the Summer Olympics to Munich Germany in 1972 as an interpreter for the US Olympic Team.... all about utilizing my time and taking advantage of opportunities.

Hey Endre Barath, Jr. so you made deal with your Dad too. Guess it was there way of guiding us in a direction they thought was a good idea rather than just say - you're going to and that's that.  That's cool that you went to the Winter Olympics as an interpreter.  Awesome.  I spent several summers living in Mexico during high school which was awesome as well. I learned so much along the way.

Hey Endre Barath, Jr. summer or winter it's all good!  Just such a great opp for you at that age.  My Mom somehow thought I should be an interpreter at the UN but just wasn't anything I wanted to do.

Good Morning Kat Palmiotti Happy Saturday!  Well yes there are many other ways of being!  For me, that's just the way I grew up.  Others don't seem to care if they do a good job, a so so job and get away with as much as they can.....I know, kind of sad but it is what is.  Somehow they don't get the joy of being about excellence - the exhilaration....you know!  You're the same way in all you do!

The old adage of if you want to be good at something, you must try, try again, came to mind as I read your post, Anna, and it's so true! Most people need to practice to become versed because very rarely is anything done excellent the first time.

Good morning Anna "Banana" Kruchten, I took typing, never had the desire to sew, and still don't. Our experiences as children as well as young adults pave the way only if we choose to learn. It takes work and practice to be excellent in anything.

Oct 23, 2023 06:30 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

The funny part to me Beth Atalay is I had zero desire to sew either but my Dad thought I was too heavy on all the other subjects and thought I 'needed' to do a different path. Why I don't know!  But it was all good in the long run so guess he was right.   Choosing to learn is the key - absolutely.  I have always loved learning - yup - was on of  those kids!!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - I'm so glad you hopped over to my blog post today because it gave me a chance to hop on over to yours. I love this post you wrote! As I was reading it, I was reminded of my four years of High School that was really four years of a Business School and they added other subjects to make it accredited for High School credit too. I was forced into taking at least 1 Home Economics Class or Cooking. I chose cooking because I felt it was more prudent to know how to eat after I left home than sew a dress. To this day, I still don't know anything about sewing, other than anytime I try to mend a button or a hem, it fails and looks like a 3 year old did it. I gave up long ago!

But your story about lining up the plaid squares makes perfect sense! As I was reading it, I had to laugh because I thought about an old movie called Trouble with Angels. I recall long ago, our posts/comments crossed and we both got a chuckle about going to a school with nuns. Haley Mills was hystrical in that movie! Remember the sewing scene with her friend who couldn't sew? That would have been me!

It's also funny that you had dad rules and I had mom & dad rules. I had to pay off my tuition by cleaning classrooms after school all four years. Times sure have changed but our values haven't changed (I think I can safely say that about both of us).

HI Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP lucky you - no sewing!  But all in all my Dad was right as he thought I was too cerebral as well as focused on sports and wanted me to branch out.  Loved that nun!  All of them were really cool actually.  This was a boarding school so the fun we had.  Kind of like Trouble with Angels movie!  Do the right thing was always my parents motto and oh yeah......still know the value of that to this day.
