THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

♦ 2002: On Oct. 27, Emmitt Smith sets a new NFL career rushing record of 16,743 yards.

♦ 1970: Gary Trudeau's comic strip "Doonesbury" debuts Oct. 26.

♦ 1965: The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO, is completed Oct. 28.

♦ 1955: The microwave oven is introduced for home use Oct. 25 by the Tappan Company.

♦ 1929: Investors dump 13 million stock shares Oct. 24, sparking the Great Depression.

♦ 1919: Congress enacts alcohol prohibition Oct. 28 with the passage of the Volstead Act.

♦ 1917: Led by Vladimir Lenin, Bolsheviks seize power in Russia Oct. 25.

♦ 1886: The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is dedicated on Oct. 28.

♦ 1825: On Oct. 26, the 363-mile Erie Canal connects Lake Erie to the Hudson River.

Wow, Statue of Liberty, dedicated in 1886. (I think Liberty died in 2020). Yikes.

Hi Dorie- of all of the memorable facts, I appreciate the introduction of the microwave oven the most!!!  what would we do without it? Although now I suppose we need the Air Fryer.

Dorie I had no idea the microwave oven has been around for 68 years. I was think more like 30-40 years.

I kind of wish that the microwave oven was never invented, haha, it seems to have led to more laziness and supposedly it kills all of the nutrients in our food.

Hi Dorie! I love your fun facts and have to say that I had no idea the microwave was introduced in 1955! I don't remember anyone having one for most of my childhood! I used one in college but, now, use my air fryer more than my microwave! LOL

I still use my microwave a lot...heating up things quickly but cooking in the oven or air fryer.
