After The Lights Go Down

You’re seated in the audience before a live theater performance. Perhaps you talk with a friend seated beside you. Excited for the show that’s about to begin, you might compare thoughts about what’s written in the program. Who do you already know from the show? Have you seen the show before? Have you waited for this show to finally be performed here, in this place, for a long time?

Then the lights go down and you have that brief interlude in the darkness JUST before the lights on stage draw you in to the beginning of the show. I thought about that brief moment when I recently attended “Noises Off”. I had thought I wasn’t familiar with the show but when we arrived and were seated, I thought… oh, I DO know this show. I’ve seen it before.

I recently attended “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” because one of my friends was starring in it. I went because of him, but I had a nagging feeling in my mind that it wasn’t one of my favorite shows. I wasn’t sure if it was because I wasn’t a fan of the composer but I went anyway. How incredibly happy I was that I did because the show was wonderful! The timing, the humor, the performers all combined to make it one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while.

As I sat in the darkness… in that momentary interlude before the stage came to life… I wondered if “Noises Off” would be as good as I had seen before. It did not disappoint! We laughed and reveled in the talented performances. I even was flirted with by one of the actors onstage. Selsdon might ring a bell with those of you familiar with the show.

A thought came to me after the show, since that moment of anticipation was something I paid attention to this time. As Realtors, we have those moments of anticipation all the time, whether or not we pay attention. The “just before” moments:  Just before we write the winning offer, just before we meet our next sellers, just before we enter a meeting. With all of the rushing and crazy moments in our business, don’t forget to take at least a moment from time to time and drink in the wonder of what it is we get to do. We singularly have the gift of helping people with such important milestones in their lives that it’s worth the time to pause… and smile… and then be ready for the next act.

Monica- You make an excellent point. We need to stop and reflect on what we are doing...the impact it may have on others.

Thanks, Kathy. Sometimes all it takes is that momentary pause and awareness of exactly where we are.
