Look around - does someone need you right now?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

Notice the people you see or speak with today...

Does someone you know have a cloud hanging over them? A smile and a few kind or encouraging words might be the rainbow they need right now.

“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

Maya Angelou

And of course, give yourself some "rainbow words" while you're at it!

The person who needs you may be a client...

It may be an elderly person who needs to move but hates the idea of leaving a home they've loved. You can't change the fact that they need to move, but you can listen. Stop and take a half hour or an hour and just let them share stories about good times in that home. Remind them that no matter where they are, those good memories will stay with them.

It could be another real estate agent...

Think of times when you've given your all for buyers - and they've purchased a home from one of your competitors. Think of the time that you worked hard for a prospective listing client, and they listed with someone else - or decided not to sell at all!

That agent across the room looking down and out might have just had a similar experience. So go over and be friendly. If they tell you the problem, remind them that there are better clients around the corner.

It could be a friend or family member...

All sorts of things can happen to make us sad or unhappy. Sometimes the easiest way to get over it is to speak with someone who cares enough to listen and hand out encouragement.

So keep your eyes open. Someone you know may need your kind words right now.

Good evening Marte Cliff ,

OMG..this was perfect for today. A colleague in my office was out walking her German Shepard and another German Shepard came at her dog and she got in the middle of it and was very badly bitten. She's had surgery and in 4 weeks will begin survey to graft over the bites. This was horrible....I talked with her today and Melissa and I are sending her flowers tomorrow.

I'm so sorry! That's terrible.

Situations like that are one reason why I don't like to let my dogs out of the car when there are other dogs around - on or off leash. You can maybe control yours, but not someone else's. Maybe if you carried pepper spray...

Was your friend's dog hurt as well? Please share my good wishes for both of them.

Hi Marte- I love this. We're all so busy walking around in our own world that we forget that others may be in need. We need to reach out to others if only to share a smile with them to let them know we're there for them.

Marte Cliff  what a powerful post, we all tend to be self centered or may I say selfish.... I got an email from a referral source today who was supposed to meet my future client and she had this to say:......

just cancelled do to the couple she was helping thru Hospice just passed away.
She was in the car on the way to meet me and had to go right back.
She seemed very sad about cancelling and I told her I am always available.

I think so too Kathy Streib. I remember one day years ago when the customer ahead of me was giving the grocery store checker a hard time over the prices. (As if the prices were her fault, of course!)

She looked really beaten down, so I started joking with her about it. I told her the next time someone pulled that to just tell them to leave. And if her boss objected, to blame me. She started laughing, just thinking about doing such a thing. By the time my groceries were bagged, she was smiling again.

Endre Barath, Jr. - You just never know what might be going on in someone's life. Sometimes even a smile from a stranger could be just what they need to get a little lift to keep on trying.

Good morning Marte. Just had a thought about being a rainbow in someone's cloud earlier this morning. Now I know where I may have been introduced to the thought. Thanks! Enjoy your day.

Marte this is such an important topic and especially in these times when there is so much going on for many people.  Almost every time I'm in a grocery store there is always a senior or two that are worried about prices and talk about it openly to whoever will listen. They're struggling to make ends meet.  I always take some time to chat with them and try to get them to lighten up in some way.....find something good to be thankful for. I have a friend that may be loosing her sight in one eye and she's quite despondent which is the opposite of her.  Several of us keep reaching out to her to cheer her up and to let her know she's not alone - we'll all be here for her no matter what.   Thank you for this  wonderful message Marte!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - I think helping people see that there is always something to be grateful for is really beneficial. Unfortunately, some people are so focused on what's wrong that they can't grasp it.

In my experience it is seniors like those in your grocery store who have too much pride to take advantage of the food banks or apply for food stamps. I admire them for it, but... they're the ones who deserve to have those resources!

Marte I should mention a local food bank to them....they just might look into it.  It's fairly close I know because we bring food over there quite often.  They do deserve it1

Thanks Charles Ross - eXp Realty LLC - of all the careers I can think of, I think real estate is the most relationship-centered.

I've known a few agents and a few customers who were "all business" but for most, there's a personal connection made somewhere along the way.

Hi Marte,
I think we need to be particularly aware of people's state of mind these days. So many people are struggling with one thing or another. It doesn't take much to give them a little of our time and attention.

Yes, Carol Williams - and money is a big one right now. I can't imagine what it takes to feed the family if you happen to have a house full of teenage boys.
