Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie a book review...

Not the first time I am thanking  Ricki Eichler McCallum for getting me back to reading again! After enjoying her novel and sequel, I next decided to pick up Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. If you've not read this classic tale book and love mysteries, this one is a must read.  I saw the movie when it came out in 1974 with the stellar cast of Sean Connery, Richard Widmark and Ingrid Bergman and Albert Finney as Inspector Poirot. After all these years, I had no recollection of the details or the ending, hence it was an easy fast-paced read that held my attention and had me guessing right up to the last page.

The history of the Orient Express is a colorful one; Wikipedia offers a great synopsis that is worth the read if you are so inclined. If not, the basics are that the Orient Express started in 1883 and pretty much ran until 2009 having interruptions only during the first and second World Wars.  There are many reasons why it ceased to exist but that is for another post. The good news is that it is being reintroduced in 2025 thanks to the Accor Hotel chain buying a 50% ownership.  Not only do they have big plans of having hotels with the Orient Express themes, but the Orient Express will run once again from Paris to Istanbul as it previously did.

Back to the book itself, it was a page turner.  I was so engulfed in the story that I had to go back a few times and re-read to make sure that I fully comprehended what I read. After all, since there was a murder, none of the passengers aboard the train were above suspicion. The characters were authentic and well developed, and I was never bored. It was especially interesting for me since there were many different nationalities aboard the train.

If you are looking for a fast-paced mystery, this book is for you. You will be reading along and trying to solve the crime just like Inspector Poirot. If you've not read anything by Dame Agatha Christie, a/k/a The Queen of Crime, this might be a good book to start with.  She certainly has a huge number of books from which to choose!  Happy reading!

Not much of a fiction reader, but more than one person has reminded me that it would enhance my personality if I did more than history/economics/real estate as part of my reading habits.

What a great mystery "Murder on the Orient Express" is! Don't you think that studying and engaging with literature is similar to solving an exciting puzzle? For me, juggling the complexities of books with academic assignments can sometimes feel like detective work. Speaking of challenges, my academic compass has been Edubirdie's gun violence examples https://edubirdie.com/examples/gun-violence/ so it's difficult to navigate both complicated societal issues and whodunits. What say you? What literary endeavors or social issues are you currently exploring? Let's explore the mysteries surrounding our academic paths and perhaps exchange some advice on how to make studying as interesting as a well-written detective story!
