ActiveRain No Tricks but Lots of Treats

First off many thanks to Leanne Smith and Endre Barath, Jr. for hosting the October Challenge.

This was a tough one for me to write. And as you can see it took until nearly the deadline to put my thoughts to keyboard. The reason? Not that the premise of the Challenge was that hard, but choosing the treats to write about when there are so many wonderful options made this…dare I say…a Challenge. Pun intended.

After much pondering I made my decision so here goes, for what it’s worth. Treats ahead.

Halloween Treats

I owe an incredible debt of gratitude to Bonnie Erickson in St. Paul Minnesota. I suspect most of you reading this, perhaps all, do not know who Bonnie is. She was an early adopter in August of 2006. But she hasn’t posted anything in over 14 years.

The amazing treat that Bonnie offered me…little did I know it at the time…was inviting me to join ActiveRain which I did September 7, 2006. I had just recently started blogging on Blogspot (I think it was) and got the invite from Bonnie. I had little clue about what I was doing about blogging and why…and some might say that’s still the case…and knew nothing about AR. But I took the plunge and have never looked back.

My blogging journey since that fateful day is hard to put into words, without going on and on for pages. The ActiveRain Treat Bag on this Halloween day overflows, and has for years. Wonderful friendships, abundant learning and sharing opportunities, giving and receiving referrals, and so much more, make Bonnie’s treat very special and everlasting. AR is not just about real estate, it’s about life, people and community.

Stepping back in AR history a bit I must mention Brad Andersohn who gave much to the community for so many years while he was affiliated with AR, and even after he moved on to other ventures. I had the opportunity to meet him in person multiple times at events including the Bloggers Connect conventions.

Brad was always generous with his wisdom and counsel as blogging was becoming mainstream in the early years, helping us all to improve what we were doing online, and building the spirit and comradery of the AR community. I still remember getting the call from my friend years ago about becoming an ActiveRain Ambassador. What an honor and a treat that was.

Jeff Turner also immediately comes to mind in the list of AR treats from the early years. A self-described “geek” and serial entrepreneur, Jeff was the President and Founder of Real Estate Shows back in 2007, and was also one of the Coaches for the Project Blogger Competition. I also had the pleasure of meeting him in person multiple times at blogging events, although it’s been a number of years. I know that if/when we meet again it will be like old times!

One very special treat from Jeff, for me, was his concept of YEO (“You engaging others”). Jeff may have been one of the first to really focus on the value of engagement with others in our blogging and not just on SEO. It’s true more than ever today in our busy blogging world and in the AR community and in real estate - engagement is essential. His post from 2007 – It’s Not About SEO. It’s About YEO – is well worth a read and so very relevant today.

The Treats are abundant at AR as we all know and have experienced. It was fun to take a walk back in AR history.

Happy Halloween – I hope you get lots of treats on this special day.

Hi Ed (Edward) Silva, 203-206-0754

Yes, the early days were interesting, and a time of much learning. The basics of blogging have not changed and still work if followed.

Jeff Dowler, CRS  thank you for such a wonderful post contributing to the October Challenge, I was not familiar with the person you mentioned since I came after you and I suspect by that time she stopped being active on the platform. As to our friend Brad Andersohn  I miss him being the community manager, he was exceptional.... and indeed we all learned how to blog but the real value came in the friendships....thank you again for participating, Endre

Thank you Kathy Streib

There are many talented bloggers here, including yourself of course. Think of how far things have come even since 2008! The early years were definitely a time of much learning about blogging and what works...or doesn't. The community has just gotten better and better.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.

Thank you! Indeed as we have all learned about blogging it's clear the relationships have become more important than ever. The foundation of AR? The people who are here and participating. Thank you for co-hosting!

Enjoyed your post, Jeff. I haven't been here long enough to actually have known the people you mentioned. Brad Andersohn is the only name I even recognize. But clearly, there were important figures in the AR story.

Jeff got involved in other things and moved away from AR but offered a lot while he was active here. I agree about the YEO post - it was fun to read it again after all these years, and it is so relevant.

We had our HVAC fall service this afternoon. The equipment is ready for the winter season. In our area, we always recommend annual service agreements.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - Do you know what I loved best about your post that I am reading today?

EVERYTHING!

I did not know Bonnie Erickson but I did click on the link and read 3 of her blog posts. I really liked her writing style and knowledge of Minnesota, renovations, and people.

Her story "One-Year-Ago" dated 1/1/2009 unraveled another story in my mind before I was a member of ActiveRain during the following year. I remember that bridge collapsing in MN vividly! Being a Midwestern from IL, WI, MN, MI, IN always felt like home stories and the people as my neighobrs. At the time of the bridge collapse, I was working with (what I perceived) difficult buyers/seller. But something happened that changed both of them and me too. You see, Mister Buyer was born and raised in MN and he had crossed that bridge with family and friends maybe a zillion times or more. Although I never crossed it that I know of, my daughter was looking into Universities in MN, and we visited the State Universities many times. Perhaps I crossed the bridge, but if I did, I don't remember.

What impact it had on my buyers/sellers and me changed us completely. It was a life changing event that rattled our bones. The sale of their home and purchase of their new home was successful but that story was unbelievable. Bonnie brought it all back to me, full circle. She sounds like a leader on AR who could tell stories like a Journalist, how they are meant to be told.

I also liked her renovation story and was astonished that it cost $50K to complete total renovation in 2009. OMG what on earth would it cost today??? Also, how much more valuable did the renovations make as time went by? And her story about Lichees was something else I learned.

Jeff,  I can understand why Bonnie and her Bio made a big impression on you! I would like to add, thank you for working with me on one of the AR Challenges as a Judge and confidant. You were my wise one. And thank you for sitting next to me at Gaylord TEXAS  to have meaningful conversations with me when you were in for the CRS event. If I never see you again, I want you to know how thankful I am because you are a true gentleman and scholar.

I remain, grateful.
Patricia

Thank you ever so much for such a thoughtful and heartfelt comment Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

I'm so grateful that I have had the opportunity to get to know you through your blogging, but even better that we got to meet in person - it was a very special time for me. Who knows what lies ahead?!

We lived in the Twin Cities for almost 3 years in the late 80s before moving back to Boston, and I certainly was over that bridge more than once.

Have a most enjoyable weekend, and thank you again for your comments!

Jeff Dowler, CRS - I knew you lived in Boston before, but did not know you lived in the Twin Cities in the late 80's. I can only imagine how much the collapsed bridge was felt in your heart and down to your bones. What I loved about Bonnie's story was the positive ending about no looting, everyone pitching in during the crises to help, doing so with good conscious, empathy, and compassion.

Thank you for your kind words. That meant a lot to me. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. You have traveled far, did a lot, and continue to be an excellent source of good information. An honest AR friend to many. As you say, "Who knows what lies ahead!"

All the best to you.

Yes, Bonnie's post certainly touched me in many ways...such an awful event and yet so many responded in positive and humane ways. So reassuring!

Awe, thanks Jeff. You were the first and most inspiring blogger I had the privilege to meet here in AR.

I learned so much from you and also learned from you how to pay it forward. Something I've now implemented into my life daily.

Thank you for that wisdom and for your special friendship over the years. I hope we can connect again soon one day. Maybe when I come down to see Endre Barth?!?
