Thank you Debe Maxwell, CRS  for the inspiration to write another grateful post, this being my second in the past twelve days.  As I reflect, I realize I could write a book not a post; I'm sure I'm not alone in my thinking on this, particularly if we take a minute or two to look around us.

www.endrebarath.com

I'll begin with my parents who instilled in me a strong work ethic, morals and principles.  As new immigrants who arrived in Austria from Communist Hungary, we shared stories and reminisced about places we lived, restaurants at which we ate, people we left behind, all during the times when things were extremely challenging. We did not even have a television, unimaginable in this day and age.  But we had a radio and we had books!  My father was an avid reader, and I can thank him for introducing me to reading and classical music both at a time when most kids my age were reading cartoons or coloring in coloring books.  Instead, I was reading Jules Verne, Mark Twain and Karl May.  Decades later I'm still reading albeit more contemporary books, and still loving the calming background of classical music.

Just as we settled into life in Austria and started to get on our feet again, my father wrote a letter to then U.S. President Lyndon Johnson, saying how much he wanted to live in the United States.  Thanks to the political push, my father's dream was realized, and we came to the U.S. as legal immigrants.   Life had to begin anew again, not to my mother's excitement. As I said, it was my father's dream to live in what he saw as the best country on the globe, so he did not at all mind starting from scratch. From both of them, I learned about hard work and perseverance and that no matter how tough things can get, you can overcome it with a positive outlook. This has been my biggest life lesson and has helped me throughout every path in my life from the military to corporate America and in Real Estate.

The older I get, the more I see, the more I realize that not everyone is as lucky as me.  While I learned the value of hard work and appreciation for everything I have, I also appreciated that when times were tough, we still managed to live comfortably.  These are lessons I live by even today.  It has never been about how big of a home we have or how expensive our cars are; these are all superficial things that while certainly making life much more comfortable, the real value is having a solid relationship, family and friends.   Our home, while certainly not grand, is enough for us.  I love our backyard citrus trees and being able to pick oranges and lemons whenever I want.  Last but certainly not least, we are surrounded by our pets who give us unconditional love every single day. In short, I am very thankful for where I am in life today.

Good morning again, Endre... every time I read "your story," it hits me how similar our backgrounds are even if we had different paths to our arrivals in the USA. And we also did not have "a lot" by many measures, but we lived comfortably, attended private schools, had nice Christmases and birthdays, never lacked for food. All this from the lessons of hard work I learned from my mother.

Hi Endre,
You were indeed lucky to have parents who gave you a solid foundation to be successful. I feel sorry for many of the younger generation who don't have that. It is such a disservice to their children by not teaching them a strong work ethic.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

What a wonderful post of gratitude, Endre! From an early age, your parents instilled these values that you shared and I am with you 100%. I believe firmly in your Dad's words as, despite our absolutely crazy government these days, we absolutely do live in the best country in the world.

I'm thankful for your parents bringing you here. You set the world on fire in the military, in corporate America AND in real estate! How fortunate for all of those who you serve in this business AND their referring agents/friends/family that they selected you.

As for the size of a home, we are totally on the same page there too. While I do enjoy things like great appliances on which I spend my time cooking - for both the enjoyment of the experience and to cook for others - I do not need a McMansion in which to cook!! That said, your trees and my garden - the 'simple' things in life, bring so much joy, don't they?!

Thank you for your entry, Endre! Looking forward to the next one!

I always enjoy hearing your story.  It reminds me what a wonderful country we live in and how fortunate we are.

We have planted two citrus trees in our backyard.  It will be a few years before we get a real crop, especially if we have another summer like we just endured.
