NEW BALLANTYNE AREA HIGH SCHOOL GETS A NAME: BALLANTYNE RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

A new high school is opening in the Ballantyne area in 2024.  The new high school is situated on a 71-acre site in Ballantyne at the corners of Johnston Road and Community House Road. The new high school is expected to relieve over-crowding at Ardrey Kell High School in Ballantyne and South Mecklenburg and Myers Park High Schools in south Charlotte. Construction is 58% complete on the $146 million project. Opening is schedule for the 2024/2025 school year.

The new Ballantyne high school will include 100 classroom, several athletic fields, academic buildings, auditorium for performing arts, and a full-sized football stadium. To see all the renderings for the new Ballantyne high school, click here.

Given the population growth of south Charlotte and the Ballantyne area, a new high school is much needed. Currently south Charlotte and the Ballantyne area are served by Ardrey Kell High School, Myers Park High School and South Mecklenburg High School Opened in  2006, Ardrey Kell High School now houses over 3,300 students. Opened in 1959, South Mecklenburg High School today houses over 3,200 students. Opened in 1951, Myers Park High School houses over 3,500 students. The new Ballantyne Ridge High School is expected to house just under 2,200 students. This means that the other three high schools' student population will fall below 3,000 and relieve the need for trailer classrooms.

Ardrey Kell, Myers Park, and South Mecklenburg High Schools are amongst the top rated high schools in the Charlotte Region. Ardrey Kell High is ranked #2 in the Charlotte region, while Myers Park High is ranked #9, and South Mecklenburg High is ranked #19.

This is good information to share with area residents.

You made me recall my days in high school when I attended the new school that was close to our home.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... I had written a post when the new high school plans had been announced. So now that it has an official name, I thought an update would be good.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... trust me... there was a lot going on with the naming of this school and tons of suggestions. While the final name might seem obvious, there were at least 10 others that were seriously in the running.

Hi Roy... I always commuted to high school since I didn't attend public schools. I often wondered what it would be like to be in a brand new facility.

Hi Nina- this is something we don't often hear...the opening of a new high school. I began at Immanuel Lutheran then went to schools named after people.

George Souto hi George... we don't build all that many high schools, so when a new one is constructed it is always state of the art.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... we don't build all that many new high schools. In the Ballantyne area Ardrey Kell High was the first and it's just a few years shy of being 20 years old although we all think of it as "new." Many of our other Charlotte high schools were built in the 50's. Providence High was built in 1989... so it's a new school compared to many of the others. Most of our schools are named after areas of town or major streets in town.

I attended Redeemer Lutheran from first through eighth grade; opened in 1955 when I started first grade; closed in 2019. I then attended Martin Luther High School, which opened in 1960 and is still running, now also with a middle school.

At the very least, it should be easier for all to remember the name of the school.

Ed (Edward) Silva, 203-206-0754 hi Ed... we can finally stop referring to the new high school as "that new high school."

We are closing schools here in Western Washington, because of low attendance. They don’t have enough kids to fill the classrooms Nina. 🙄

Nina Hollander, Broker - There is no doubt about it, our population is exploding in the USA and we need more schools with identifyable names. In Frisco, the last house I listed I found out by calling the school to verify if the schools were correct before listing in MLS.  I was told they can't keep up and to pay no attention to what's online because the city is growing so rapidly. For the area I listed, kids were being sent to other schools outside the district because they were over capacity and more kid's parents or guardians were registering before September 2023 than they anticipated.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP we have the same issues here, Patricia. Many schools are over capacity and just because the official assignment is for a specific school, kids might actually be sent to other schools. It's why all my listings have a disclaimer saying that purchasers must personally verify school assignments.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I did the same thing in MLS and I notify agents who schedule showings, make offers, and another reminder during the option period.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I also, just to be "safe," place the disclaimer in marketing materials I leave in my listings.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS oh wow, Paul. I had no idea. It's just the opposite here... we are in desperate need of more classrooms... many of our schools are way over capacity and kids are in classrooms in trailers.

Endre Barath, Jr. oh I'm certain the teachers will be more woke than not. It's why if I had kids in school today they would be in parochial schools.

It's interesting to learn how names come to be.  My idea for streets within the development that I am building is for them to be named after Saints.

Brian England that's a cool idea, Brian. How many streets with saint names are you expecting to have?

I don't know, but I know there are plenty of names to choose from!
