An Attitude of Gratitude This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Meme

The relationship between gratitude and Thanksgiving is deeply ingrained in this holiday. Some of us grew up going around the table sharing "something" we are thankful for. Quotes about gratitude and Thanksgiving pop up everywhere on our social media feeds along with hashtags like #blessed, #grateful and #thankful. No doubt these "feelings" are sincere, but there is a difference between being thankful and being grateful.

Being thankful is a fleeting moment, a feeling. Like when a stranger finds and returns your wallet.  On the other hand, being grateful is a mindset. It is an appreciation for all that life brings, (good or bad), because even our worst moments and memories can shape us in so many positive ways.

Gratitude is a powerful thing.  Its power is not just in the receiving -- but in the giving.  Showing gratitude costs nothing. Not in money or time anyway. We can afford to use it every single day and everyone would benefit.

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings,

turn routine jobs into joy,

and change ordinary opportunities into blessings."

  -- William Arthur Ward

For many of us, just a few years ago, Thanksgiving was a virtual holiday. We had our dinner in our small pandemic bubble or unfortunately, some of us were alone. Some of us powered up our laptops for a Zoom conference with family and friends.

We crowded into a tight group to fit everyone onto the screen, and made conversation, waving into the camera and possibly raising a glass for a long-distance toast.  In short, we made do.  It was what it was.

It wasn't horrible. But it also wasn't the same as years gone by.  And so this year, let us look forward to this upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday more than ever before!

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget

that the highest appreciation is not

to utter words but to live by them."

-- John F. Kennedy

Important distinction between being grateful and giving thanks. They're related but not exactly the same!

Gratitude is what I have always thought of when I think of Thanksgiving, especially since what the holiday was created for might not have been the best of things, haha.

Well, wasn't it a holiday to celebrate the pilgrims discovering America, but in reality the Native Americans were already living here?

Good morning, Diana... I loved how you explained the distinction between being thankful and being grateful. Being grateful is indeed a mindset. And I've never had any doubt that the more we give the more we received in return.

Matthew 10:8 says it plainly ... freely you have received - freely give.  In other words, Christians who practice generosity without expecting anything in return.

Hi Diana,
I've never thought about the difference between being thankful and grateful, but your distinction makes perfect sense. I guess the two terms are not really interchangeable.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving gathering with those you love.

Hi Diana gratitude is start of  each and day and throughout the day.  Gary and I say quite often during the day, and evening how grateful we are for our life and home etc etc etc.  It's a mindset.  We'll be enjoying this Thanksgiving in a more quite way due to what's been going on here but nevertheless it will be filled with joy and gratefulness - and fun!

I think I may have missed something, so I apologize for that.  Not sure what is going on, so with that, I will pray for you and Gary, and sincerely wish both you and Gary a Blessed and Contented Thanksgiving. Please let me know in a private message what is happening.  And when you do, I will update you on something also.  Thanks Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Oh, Diana, I absolutely LOVE this post and boy, does it ever resonate on so many levels!

I love your quotes and they are oh-so true. As for living in the moment, I try SO hard to do just that! In fact, I've been so focused on that the last few Thanksgivings, I neglected to get a single photo! One year, after everyone left, I realized I had forgotten to put my shoes on - I wore my slippers the entire day!! I found my phone and snapped a photo and that was the only photo I had from that Thanksgiving!! LOL

Last week, I was joking that I was going to lay my phone on the counter, in silent mode, to remind me to snap a few photos this year!

Being in the moment is something we ALL need to be more self-aware of, Diana. Our lives are filled with distractions and constant pings, dings & rings and we feel so compelled to BE THERE FOR EVERYONE! The thing is, those who are in front of us are most important at that moment in time. We just need to program ourselves to ignore the distractions!

Thank you so much for sharing this in this month's challenge, Diana! I hope you and yours have a lovely Thanksgiving!

Debe Maxwell, CRS Well you just made my day!  I had to laugh (outloud) - "with you" of course, about ending the day of Thanksgiving realizing you wore your slippers all day long!  Sounds like something I would have done, but unlike you, taking pictures is my forte.  In fact, my family expects it.  I'm always looking for that opportunity to catch a moment to remember!

Thank you again for your oh so amazing response to my first blog for the November Challenge!  I really had fun doing it, and am working on another one for next week.  So stay tuned!

Wishing you and yours a Blessed and Contented Thanksgiving!

One of my favorite bible verses (and there are many) is:

Good morning Diana,

Love your post and so glad to see it featured! Congratulations! Being in the moment with your devices put aside is so important! Life is short and making memories is a contact sport....being available and involved! I spend a couple of hours yesterday with my granddaughter who flew in from NYC yesterday....loved our talk!

There is nothing more precious than having the "pure attention" of your teenage grandchildren ... from my perspective.  I fly all the way to Arizona to see them and their faces are often locked unto their cell phones.  I'm embarrassed to have to tell them to put their phones down -- but they are often so engrossed by the addiction of this tool. Begrudgingly, they do and we have some special moments. I'm so glad you were able to spend special time with your granddaughter yesterday.  You are so blessed Dorie Dillard Austin TX

Really enjoyed reading this! It's so true how Thanksgiving makes us think about gratitude in a deeper way. I love the idea that gratitude is more about a mindset than just a moment. It's something I've been trying to practice more often, not just when something good happens. And yes, those Zoom Thanksgivings were something else, weren't they? 😄 This year, I'm definitely looking forward to the real deal – sharing stories and laughs around the table, no screens involved. Let's make this Thanksgiving all about being in the moment and appreciating the little things. Here's to a day of good food, great company, and genuine gratitude. Cheers!

Brian England According to the History Channel, the first thanksgiving celebration is believed to have occurred in 1621. The story, historically told from the pilgrim's perspective, is that Plymouth colonists from England shared a meal with the indigenous Wampanoag people to give thanks for a successful fall harvest.

As I sit at my daughter's dining room table, while the house wakes up, i asked my son-in-law, "did i come for Thanksgiving during covid?"   And he says, "YES!"   How lucky am I to always feel welcome to come for Thanksgiving in Iowa!

Your post is heartwarming and I love the title!  Think I've used something similar in the past.  It's great to wake up  with an Attitude of Gratitude, too :)  Happy Thanksgiving!
