How to be a Great Thanksgiving Guest
Wine and flowers are always great go-to gifts at Thanksgiving, but even wine and flowers can add more stress to the host. Flowers need to be put in a vase. Wine needs to be iced or stored or served (if it matches the dinner.)
Instead here are three suggestions that break the mold.
Bring Your Own Apron
Can you imagine how your host will love you if you walk into the kitchen and say - how can I help? and you even brought your own apron to prove you are really serious about helping.
You could even bring a brand-new apron and give it to the host at the end of the night!
It goes without saying that you need to take your guidance from your host. Some hosts love having a guest willing to stir (or make) the gravy while other hosts will only let you fill the water glasses at the table. But it is nice to volunteer! and clean up help is always welcome!
Bring Your Own Take-home Containers for Leftovers
When dinner is over, then the host has to figure out where to put the left-overs. Thanksgiving frequently produces more leftovers than I have storage or stomach space for. This is when I love sending my guests home with extra turkey or scalloped potatoes.
If you have that kind of relationship with your host where you know they are going to be sending you home with leftovers, you can do your host a huge favor by coming equipped with your own snap-lid containers, reusable silicone bags, or just some repurposed takeout tubs. Doing so means your host won’t have to make a mental note to track you down for borrowed containers.
I know there's a fine line between being pushy about demanding specific leftovers and being helpful. But if you were at my Thanksgiving, I’d be so pleased by your proactive approach that I’d insist you help yourself to first dibs while I tucked into another glass of wine.
A handy stain remover
Stains always happen at a holiday meal. If you have a handy Tide to Go pen orsome OxiClean spray, everyone will love you. Tide pens are frequently sold in packs of three, so you can offer them up en masse as a need-a-pen, take-a-pen present for all, or you can leave them behind at the end of the night. Either way, your host will be thrilled that they won’t have to get out of their seat to whip up a makeshift stain solution.
