Gratitude For Rosalynn Carter Who Paved The Way

It is important to celebrate the roles that women have played in improving so much for so many.   Women have played pivotal roles in history and they deserve our gratitude.   If it weren't for countless women serving in positions to enact change, women would not have gained so much.   For those women, I am grateful!

There are so many outstanding women who have accomplished so much that it would be foolish to start a list for fear of eliminating even one amazing woman.  For this post Thankful Challenge, I'd like to focus on one amazing woman - Rosalynn Carter.

Rosalynn faced challenges like a lot of women growing up in the 1940's.   Women were still expected to wear dresses in public, in schools, everywhere.  Women weren't assuming leadership roles, much less being given the opportunity.    Women were subservient to men and told to be polite, not vocal.  Imagine that Rosalynn was a timid, shy child.  Hard to believe given her accomplishments.

Rosalynn lost her father at the age of 13  and so had to help raise her siblings.  Even with those added responsibilities, she still managed to graduate as Valedictorian of her class!

Rosalynn also accomplished much to help so many when Jimmy Carter was Governor of Georgia.    Anyone who champions mental health, helping those who often cannot speak for themselves, is to be commended.  Rosalynn's dedication to mental health issues became a life long legacy.  She was also a humanitarian, championing MANY causes throughout her life, including wearing a toolbelt into her 80's helping build or remodel Habitat for Humanity homes.

For more detail about she and President Carter's humanitarian work, visit this CNN article.

During the inauguration in 1977 of her husband,  Jimmy Carter as the 39th President, they both walked down Pennsylvania Avenue instead of riding in a limousine as others had done in the past.   Working for change seemed to be the start of 4 good years in the White House with Rosalynn by his side.

With gratitude for a wonderful legacy and profound influence for so many .

Good evening Jan,

Loved that you chose Rosalynn Carter for your gratitude post for the November challenge. She was an amazing lady and I'd forgotten how they walked down Pennsylvania Avenue instead of riding in a limousine! It was a defining moment in history.

Thanks for a great tribute to our former first lady Rosalynn Carter!!!

Women were subservient to men and told to be polite, not vocal.  Imagine that Rosalynn was a timid, shy child.  Hard to believe given her accomplishments.

Good morning Jan. A great tribute to a woman that was so under appreciated for so many years. That said, it did not stop her or slow her down. Enjoy your day.

Good  morning, Jan... a wonderful tribute to Rosalynn Carter. It's with looking back that we can truly appreciate everything she contributed to the world as a humanitarian. I'm old enough to remember her as First Lady... and I also remember just how controversial she was in her role as such. Now we "honor" her for what she was criticized for in the 1970's.

It seems sad how quickly life passes. I remember her as First Lady...so young and vibrant.

An excellent post for the Challenge. There have been many noteworthy spouses to the President and Rosalyn was a woman of Southern grace and charm.

Oh, you know I love this post, Jan! I admired her so during her years as our First Lady and even more so after she left the White House. She was a rock for her husband and certainly did pave the way for women in a time that was frowned upon.

Thank you so much for sharing your gratitude for Rosalynn Carter in November's challenge, Jan.

Me too, Nina Hollander, Broker.  Although that was the year I graduated high school, I can still remember them walking down Pennsylvania Avenue.  Until I started reading more about her, I had no idea of her lifelong accomplishments.  What a wonderful legacy for her family.

Thank you for the challenge Debe Maxwell, CRS !  Since they were from the South, I thought you might have some opinions!  Women making strides is what overcoming adversity is all about.  I have another post to write today, another passing.  I'll bet you know who that might be about!

You and me both Brian England !  When I had the idea and started reading about her, I was travelling for Thanksgiving (Iowa.)  So I wrote down the title and saved it for when I returned, but then got busy with other things.  There are so many grateful posts!  I'll have to check out yours.  Last year I wrote about my family and others, but decided to write a different type of post this year. Merry Christmas Brian!

That's a great description of her Aura Alex !  Her easy smile and warm way of "being" exuded so much familiarity.  She was a great lady.  When I watched the different news coverages of her funeral her son really struck me.  He had addiction issues and she "saved" his life.  Now that's a legacy! Thank you for reading and commenting!
