Month of Gratitude: thankful for my work family.

Real Estate Agent with Thompson Company, REALTORS® 240.593.2860 MD594797

15 years ago this November, I was in a pretty bad car accident. I was on my way to show property in Silver Spring when another driver ran a red light. I was 24 weeks pregnant at the time. My car was totaled. I was in shock, had a concussion and cracked ribs. I was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where I went into early labor. Thankfully, they were able to stop it with some magical medicine and I was put on modified bed rest for the next 15 weeks. Talk about being grateful!

At that time, I was still affiliated with a big national franchise. It was a good place to start out when I first got licensed in 2004, but I didn't feel valued there and thought about finding a new professional home. Just days prior to my accident, I interviewed with Larry Thompson at the urging of my very good friend Rosie who had worked with him for some time. Larry - who passed away a few years ago - was the 2nd generation to lead Thompson Company, REALTORS® which was founded by his father back in 1946. That's right. 1946. It is one - if not the - oldest independently owned brokerage in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Larry was a character! He had a dry sense of humor, but always a twinkle in his eye. But, more importantly, he was passionate about Real Estate and cared deeply about his family - and me, even though we had just met. Larry was extremely worried about me when he learned about my accident - unlike the people at the big franchise. I knew then that I needed to make the switch and join Thompson Company. I wanted to be part of a family vs. just agent no. 123.

15 years later, I still call Thompson Company home, and the 3rd generation to lead the company, Cherie Conrad, a dear friend of mine. Cherie and I just clicked from the moment we met and we've teamed up on many listings over the years. We never had to sit down to hash out who is responsible for what, it just happened naturally. Clients have called us the local dream team and I couldn't love that any more than I do.

I couldn't imagine a better work family. The Thompson/Conrad family has been so supportive of my career and my little family. Cherie took my children horseback riding when they were little while I took clients on a home tour. She's my boots on the ground when I visit the family in Germany and look at local Real Estate there. Together we have staged listings (a service we always offer to our special clients), solved Real Estate puzzles, celebrated Happy Closing Days, birthdays, milestones, and Holidays, beat the bridge, and run a race honoring our parents and supporting Parkinson's research

When I had car trouble, her husband Terry and son TC came to my rescue. They were also quick to help when I had mice in my attic (do not recommend, the mice that is)!

Terry and TC run Oak Hill Construction and have helped many of our clients' pre-and-post settlement with various repairs and upgrades. They've reviewed pretty much every inspection report, whether we were working with sellers or buyers, and helped sort out what really is an issue and what's not a big deal (or a wrong call! That happens, too!). We call them our "in-house contractors" with much appreciation. Having Oak Hill Construction by our side (below our office!) is truly one of the perks of working with a small boutique brokerage!

Larry's tagline used to be: Thompson Company, REALTORS® - progressing towards a century in Real Estate. He wasn't wrong, just 23 more years to go. I think we got this! I would love to make Larry proud.

So, I want to dedicate this gratitude post to my work family, Thompson Company (and Oak Hill Construction). I am proud to be a part of a boutique brokerage with such deep roots in the community. I am proud to be a part of its growth and the changes that come with it. I am proud to be a part of this (work) family that is forever expanding to include our clients!

I thank you for all your support and all the love over the years. I appreciate you all more than you know, and I am excited to see what the next 23 years bring!

You don’t always need the big franchise stuff to make an impact. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours and good luck

I agree, Laura Cerrano. I feel much more at home - and valued - at a boutique brokerage than I ever did at the big national franchise.

Hello Andrea - timing is an interesting factor in life.  It certainly applies to real estate - participants and even practitioners.  While I am sorry for the circumstances,  I am glad the results so far are working in your favor.

That is so true. I sometimes wonder why something had to happen when it did, but looking back, I can tell that it urged me down a different path. Thank you, Michael Jacobs

It was a difficult time, Endre Barath, Jr. I was given the instructions to not carry anything heavy nor walk stairs. Well, I had a 3-year-old at the time, and lived in a townhouse! Thank you!

No matter where we work, the people that we get to be around on a daily basis make it enjoyable or not and often become our best friends since we spend so much time around them.

Very true, Brian England!  Cherie has become one of my best friends over the years, no doubt. I made a couple of very good friends at the big franchise as well, but the environment was extremely competitive, envious at times, and just didn't have the family vibe that helped me thrive.

I love this post! I had similar experiences with a big box brokerage early on - I'm glad you were able to find a brokerage that values you! And cares. Whoo!

Good morning, Andrea. With the hours we put into our businesses, our work families are so important. I've had a bit of a different experience from yours. I found myself less valued in a smaller local brokerage, but am treated like a princess in my current national brokerage.

Knowing your brokerage has your back, and is supportive and nurturing, is what counts. I'm sure you can find that at a national franchise as well, it just didn't work out for me. I'm glad you are being treated like a princess, Nina Hollander, Broker, rightly so!

Their instructions were impossible to follow, Endre Barath, Jr.! It was a rough 15 weeks, and a dramatic birth - that's a different story, though. But, we are both happy, healthy, and thriving!
