One of my favorite coffee shops in Howard County, MD is Roggenart, European Bakery Bistro & Cafe. They have 3 locations in the county, Ellicott City, Columbia, and in Savage at the entrance of the historic mill. The latter is my go-to place because the ambiance is cozy and reminds me most of a little cafe in Europe. So when I need a latte fix or my heart is a little heavy with a bout of homesickness, I am headed to Savage Mill to spend some time at Roggenart. It always does the trick.
Roggenart serves up the most delicious lattes, any flavor combination you can possibly imagine, and always has quite a selection of yummy pastries and quiches. Unfortunately, there are no dairy/gluten-free options for me, but my children absolutely love the pastries. The caramel schnecke is among their favorites because it tastes just like the ones in Germany. I can also highly recommend their breakfast/brunch options! It gets busy on the weekends though and you may not luck out with a table. If it's warm enough, there's a little patio out front where you can hang out for a few.
Afterwards, take a stroll through Savage Mill, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. It was beautifully restored and is home to numerous boutiques and small (artsy) businesses. Visit the antique center (it's quite large) and score a treasure there or at Charity's closet(s). There are a few other boutiques to browse through, the little bookshop and Artcraft are always places I have to stop in.
Roggenart, especially its Savage Mill location, is hands down one of the best coffee shops in Howard County, MD! It's truly a little taste of Europe and just what this German expat needs at times.
