A Rock Concert For Senior Citizens

One of the activities I like to enjoy - to remain hip and happening - is going to a rock concert. Yes, I said rock concert. I still have fun going to concerts.

Last year I started a spreadsheet listing the rock concerts that I have attended over the years. I only included national or international artists, not the local cover bands that pop up at fairs or car shows.

The total so far is seventy-four. Some of the highlights include big-name stars like Bob Dylan, B. B King, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. The list continues to grow as this year we attended concerts by Joe Bonamassa and Ringo Starr.

Our most recent was a long overdue event featuring Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon fame and Jeremy Clyde from the 1960s duo Chad & Jeremy.

When we purchased the tickets, I was skeptical that these two older performers could still entertain a crowd and sound good. To my surprise, the show was everything I hoped for and more.

Asher, now 79 years old, went on to become a major record producer. His resume for producing hit records includes a long list of stars including James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Diamond.

Jeremy Clyde, 82 years young, in addition to being a number one singer/songwriter, went on to become a television and movie star in both the U.K. and the U.S.

Both men entertained the crowd with stories from the British Invasion era. They then teamed up to sing some of their top-selling hits from the 1960s like Chad & Jeremy’s hit A Summer Song and Peter & Gordon’s A World Without Love. To keep the audience from getting bored with oldies, they also included their own versions of James Taylor’s You’ve Got a Friend, Ed Sheeran’s 2014 hit Thinking Out Loud, and Jeremy’s 2023 re-release of Distant Shores.

The show hosted at Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum’s concert hall was a sold-out event. I shouldn’t have to tell you the audience consisted mostly of people born in the 1950s who still enjoy an evening of great music and songs they can sing along with.

All in all, it was a fun night. It seems I have been born into a generation of people who refuse to grow old and for some reason the music we grew up with never grows old.

So that’s two more top-name performers I have added to my spreadsheet. I know that I will continue to attend as many rock concerts as I can until my favorite artists can no longer remember the words, or I can no longer appreciate their music.

How wonderful that you are still enjoying concerts. The only person you mentioned that I also saw was BB King.

We grew up in the same era - Joseph Domino 480-390-6011. The last time I went to the doctor, I told her I was going deaf. When I was younger, she asked if I went to concerts, and I said, "Oh yes!   I can hear certain people, but I cannot hear some. She informed me that the type of hearing aid I would need was costly + with my sinus and ear infections, it might not be worth it. I made her laugh when I replied that sometimes I thought it was a blessing.

Skip the hearing aid and turn the music up louder.

Good for yo joseph,

My brother and wife still go to lots of rock concerts and they are in their early 70's. They appreciate their favorites like you do! Good for you!

Hi Joseph- I love this!!!! I remember seeing the Stones years ago and I took my brother to see Creedence Clearwater Revival. When we were in Delray we saw The Letterman. Not rock but of my era. And when we were in Avalon NJ several years back, we saw Frankie Avalon, Fabian, and the late Bobby Rydell.

Chad and Jeremy and Peter & Gordon were my favorite duos.

Wow I'm jealous you saw Zeppelin, but I too saw the Stones about 30 years ago.

It's great you still attend concerts and support musicians, I do too and I think it keeps us young!
