Pearl Harbor Day: A Day of Remembrance and Hope

On December 7, 1941, a surprise attack by Japanese forces on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii changed the course of history. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and over 1,100 were wounded in the attack, which also destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American ships and over 300 planes. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan and joined the Allies in World War II, calling the attack “a date which will live in infamy”.

Today, we observe National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day to honor and remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and democracy. We also commemorate the valor and resilience of those who survived and fought on, as well as the spirit of peace and reconciliation that emerged after the war. We pay tribute to the heroes who defended our nation and the ideals we cherish, and we reaffirm our commitment to uphold their legacy of hope for a better world.

There are many ways to observe Pearl Harbor Day and learn more about its significance. You can visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii, where you can see the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, and the USS Utah Memorial, which honor the service members who were killed in the attack. You can also watch the annual commemoration ceremony online, which features speeches, music, wreath presentations, and a moment of silence. You can also read books, watch documentaries, or listen to podcasts that tell the stories of Pearl Harbor survivors and veterans. You can also thank a veteran or a service member for their service and dedication to our country.

Pearl Harbor Day is not only a day of remembrance, but also a day of hope. It reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of our heroes, the strength and unity of our nation, and the power and possibility of peace. It inspires us to work together for a more peaceful and prosperous future for ourselves and generations to come.

Good morning, Lew... a nice post about the significance of Pearl Harbor. I was born just a few years later, so don't have any memory of it, but as my family was in Europe during WWII this war is by no means a "distant memory" for me.

Hi Nina - thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your perspective and your family’s experience in WWII.

It was memorable as it was an attack on an isolated nation. and put us on notice that we can be reached. It happened again years later, as the world got smaller.

Hi Ed - Indeed, it was a tragic and historic event that changed the course of history. I agree that we live in a more interconnected and vulnerable world now.

Lew Corcoran thank you for this post.  It seems with each passing year less and less is said about what happened in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Mahalo for reminding many of us about our nations' history of supreme sacrifice by our military personnel 82 years ago and the subsequent ultimate sacrifices until the war ended. Our freedoms are not free, yet, many in America are delusional and that is scary, don't you think?  God Bless the USA.

Mahalo to you too, Kimo. I share your gratitude for the brave men and women who fought and died for our country in World War II, and I agree that we should never take our freedoms for granted. God Bless the USA.

I can’t begin to understand the shock this must have been to the USA on Dec.7 1941

It was indeed a shocking and devastating day for the USA, as they lost thousands of lives and many ships and planes in a surprise attack by Japan. I'm sure not many of us can comprehend it.

it is truly sad that with each passing year, there is less mention of Pearl Harbor....9/11 is following the same fate...but we have to hear about George Floyd every year

Hi Paddy - I think that Pearl Harbor Day is still widely observed and commemorated across the nation, as evidenced by the numerous ceremonies and events that take place every year on December 7th. Unfortunately, the media doesn’t pay much attention to it.
