The Lowdown on LoSo - From Lattes to Lagers and More
First off, you may be asking, "What exactly is LoSo?" Well, when I learned what it meant, I was pretty sure I wasn’t the only Charlottean to have to figure out what the newest neighborhood acronym meant!
I’m sure you already know Charlotte's South End like the back of your hand. Just a hop, skip and a jump further down Tryon Street, you'll stumble into the vibrant area now known as LoSo or Lower South End.
Getting there is a breeze, especially with the Scaleybark LYNX light rail stop right in the heart of it all. And once you're there? Talk about options! This entertainment hub is bursting with spots to grab a drink, whether you're into beer, cider or liquor. But that's not all; you'll also find a slew of amazing restaurants, cafes and fitness studios to keep the good times rolling.
Ready to dive into the LoSo scene? Kick things off with a one-of-a-kind lavender vanilla latte or a refreshing kombucha on tap at Mugshots Coffee & Tea or drive through or walk-up to Burr & Berry Coffee on South. My best tip for Burr & Berry is to order the Bee’s Knees latte - AMAZING!
If brunch is more your style, you can't go wrong with Chef Alyssa's Kitchen. The pancake tacos and stuffed French toast are basically a rite of passage. Another wonderfully hip Brunch restaurant is State of Confusion where you can dine on authentic, scratch-made, fresh from locally-sourced ingredients, Latin American with a flare from New Orleans and the Carolina Lowcountry! It’s a marriage of cultural delights simply made in heaven!
Need to work off that fabulous brunch? Get that heart rate up at Urban MVMNT or Ride Or Die Spin Studio. The best part? They're both in the same building as Mugshots. Talk about convenience! Feel like taking your climbing to new heights? 2220 S. Tryon is home to Inner Peaks Climbing and offers state-of-the-art facilities for all ages and all skill levels.
Ready to switch gears and do some shopping? Make your way down to Sleepy Poet - just past Archdale on South Boulevard. It’s a little outside the LoSo area but, definitely quick & easy access with a much larger warehouse than when it was housed in the original LoSo location. This place is jam-packed with antique home decor and vintage clothing & jewelry Just a heads-up: you might find yourself lost in a labyrinth of retro gems for hours. It’s one of my favorite places to go antiquing!
For dinner, the options are endless! One of our favorites is the El Puro Cuban Restaurant - there’s really nothing on the menu that won’t WOW your senses! Seoul Poke Bowl is another favorite and many visitors will tell you that this restaurant has the best poke bowl in town!
The legendary, ‘retro’ steakhouse that’s been been the go-to steakhouse for 65 years - yes, well before LoSo even became a thing…even before South End got its name! Beef ’n Bottle is tried & true and with an intimate, old-school atmosphere that keeps us coming back for another ‘cozy’ experience! If you’ve never been, you won’t want to miss the ambiance, the impeccable service and their award-winning steaks. Beef ’n Bottle has been voted again and again as Charlotte’s #1 Steak Restaurant in Charlotte by USA Today as well as being named Open Table’s Best Steakhouses in America!
And of course, the craft breweries are plentiful in the LoSo area which houses The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Brewers at 4001 Yancey, Gilde 1546 Brewery and Protagonist among several others in the neighborhood.
