This month Dr. Paul McDonald and Kathleen Daniels are co-hosting the December ActiveRain challenge titled "Acts of Kindness | Sharing Love & Joy This Holiday Season." For this challenge are to write up to 3 blogs about acts of kindness in one or all three of the following categories:
- Act of Kindness of Someone You Know.
- Your Acts of Kindness.
- Act of Kindness that You Witnessed.
For my first blog I have chosen to write about an act of kindness my wife and I were blessed with this year, and also how we in turn were able to play-it-forward.
Some of those who follow my blog, and attend the ActiveRain Weekly ZOOM Meetings know that my wife had open heart surgery, to replace one of her heart valves this Summer. She went through two surgeries and three hospital stays within a three week period. During that time she was not able to do much for herself, so I had to help with even very simple things like getting up from a chair, and putting on her close. Things that most of us take for granted. Her attitude during this time was amazing, and she always had a smile on her face, and always anticipated the best. Trying to take care of her, and business left very little time for anything else.
One of the things that the church I go to, Meriden Church of Christ, does is to help with meals in situations like my wife and I were experiencing. For a month several families at church made sure we had a hot meal every night. Every night some of the most delicious meals I have had were delivered, and offers to help with any other need we might have.
As great as the meals were, the knowledge of knowing if something came up that we needed assistance with, there were people who were ready and willing to give a helping hand. The peace of mind in knowing this was priceless.
In turn earlier this month a young couple at church had their first child. Anyone who has children knows that adjusting to a babies needs and time schedule is a challenge, especially getting some sleep. Those little people leave very little time in the first couple of weeks to do anything else but taking care of them. This presented an opportunity for us to return the same kindness that we received by volunteering to help provide meals.
Providing a meal in times like this is simple, but yet a world of difference for those who are receiving them. By the way it does not have to be dinner, breakfast, or lunch are always very welcomed as well.
