When I first joined ActiveRain, one of the first comments I ever made was on an agent’s post where she showed a PowerPoint presentation she had prepared as part of her new pre-listing package. I thought it was a great idea...and that she did an amazing job on it.
But it's an occupational hazard of mine...and I couldn’t help but notice that the title page said:
“My Personnel Commitment To You” instead of “My Personal Commitment To You”.
I thought I was being helpful by pointing out the error, but whoa!!! I was attacked from every direction!! People accusing me of putting her down...or snidely “apologizing” that I found her presentation to be sooooo disappointing. Fellow agents who defended her so vehemently that they suggested I ought to be ashamed of myself and that people like me aren’t welcome or needed in a community-oriented site like ActiveRain.
Huh?? Um....I wanted to save her any embarrassment in front of her sellers by giving her a chance to correct the mistake, that's all.
Needless to say, it surprised me that a simple gesture of pointing out a misspelled word would garner such a response, but I realize it’s something we’re all a bit self-conscious about...and possibly even a little thin-skinned about at times. Note: We’ve all since made up...and I hope if she sees this post...she’ll understand that I’m NOT putting her on the spot or criticizing again.
Far from it! I want this to be a helpful post.
But people ARE evaluating your every move....including your spelling!
Sure, we all make typos....but I’m not talking about that.
What I’m talking about are things like “Formal Dinning Room” in your MLS description. Or, “There home is nicely decorated” on your listing brochure, or “The extra acrage is wonderrful to build up on and is perfect for the eqestrian enthuziast.” on your internet site.
You do not have to be an expert speller in order to be successful in this business. BUT...you MIGHT have to enlist someone’s help in ensuring that what you put out there for public consumption truly represents you as a professional, caring, and capable real estate agent (yes even on a blog here if it’s in Localism or for Public Viewing).
Ask a stranger (NOT your best friend)...if they’d list their $1,000,000 dollar home with an agent who can’t spell “granite counters.” Or puts “stainless steal applinces” as part of their property description. The answer will be “no”. If an agent hasn’t applied himself/herself throughout their lives in learning basic spelling and/or grammatical skills, what makes you think they’ve taken real estate, market analysis, marketing and contract law seriously?
You owe it to yourself to make sure everything you create...your website, your flyers, your postcards, your brochures...EVERYTHING...all have a professional consistency about them in terms of spelling and grammar.
Maybe the reason you lost the last listing WASN’T the sellers using you! I’ve read a lot of recent posts that seem to “find reasons” why a consumer recently let them down by choosing another agent to handle their sale. The reasons they come up with vary greatly....but NEVER EVER address that the reason COULD have been as simple as the other agent having everything perfect (after all, the sellers were schoolteachers)....and your presentation simply had to many misstakes.
