One More Time Into The Breach

By
Industry Observer with Inactive Inactive

It was Shakespeare who famously said “Once More Unto The Breach” in his play Henry V. The oration was a pep talk from the king intended to rally his troops to battle.

In my case, the cause will be less dramatic, yet still important. You see, it is the time of year when again I must ask myself, Do I continue one more year or shutter the windows and doors?

With the real estate market again changing course, this may be the right time to walk away and watch what happens from the shore. Or do I tack into the wind, stay on course, and ride the next wave?

I have long since stopped buying ads and doing open houses. Relying on referrals and word of mouth to stay relevant in a business dominated by younger, hungrier, better-looking agents. How long to continue?

Then, the other day I was out looking at some new-build homes in a nearby community. I knew the builder and their product, and I was keeping up with their latest inventory and incentives. As I toured the house a car pulled up in front. The people were inquisitive, so I encouraged them to come inside. I showed them the house and its features. I handed them my business card, explained my role, and offered to help them should they decide to buy.

They probably won’t be buying any time soon. I will call them “lookie-loos” but it was fun and got my juices flowing again.

With a handful of prospects starting to fill the pipeline again it seems one more trip around the sun may be in order. So, the decision has been made.

And all without a pep talk from King Henry V.

Hello Joseph - it appears the stage has been set for your decision-making to take place.  Et tu or something like that, right?

I was initially relieved to know that little math was involved with an AR membership; now it seems as if my knowledge of Shakespeare has become necessary.  Alas, Much Ado About Nothing.   Good luck as the curtain falls on 2023 and best wishes in 2024.

Thanks, Michael. Yes, in retrospect, it is much ado about nothing. Unless it's a banner year.

Hi Joseph- there are some jobs we do that stay with us and it seems you have yours!!!  I've read many posts here from agents who have plans for when they "hang up" the For Sale signs!  Dorie Dillard Austin TX mentioned it recently as well as Liz and Bill Spear

Yes, I still feel confident I can do a good job. But those open house signs take up a lot of room in the garage.

It's certainly a valid thing to consider.  Sitting on my To Do list is the annual MLS fees of $698 for Liz and me.  Liz is essentially retired from the business, I'll have been dual career for 20 years in 2024, and we're working on getting our house built in another state to move to in 2024.  I have zero intent of gaining a new license in WV after we move.  Keep our Ohio license active, go 100% refer out, and if that doesn't make financial sense after a year or two, I'll close the doors entirely.

I think you have a good strategy for winding down.

Thanks Wayne. I think I can still help. That's the key. If I can help the client and make a little money that's the goal.

Coasting to a stop and hopping off the real estate merry go round. It's everyone's personal decision on what is best for them. Ah, but what do you replace all the time spend listing and selling. Better have some hobbies to fill the gap Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 ! Good luck in the one more trip around the Sun.
