My mother was an extraordinary woman who faced so many challenges in her life. She came to the US from Germany at age 21 without knowing anyone or speaking English. At 39, she became a widow and was left to raise her two children while running a restaurant in Virginia. She worked tirelessly every day, from early morning until late at night. Despite the difficulties she faced, she was loved and admired by everyone in town for her hard work and determination.
When I moved her to Baltimore, she quickly became involved in the community. She gave generously to charity and people in need, never considering her actions as gifts because they didn't cost anything.
Her selflessness and kindness were infectious, inspiring others to do the same. And despite her struggles, my mother's kindness and selflessness never wavered.
I'll never forget when I discovered numerous gifts in my mother's home. Questioning these items, I found that each one had a unique story - from bringing fresh laundry daily to a hospitalized neighbor, reading to a blind neighbor, or taking a neighbor (who no longer drove) to the grocery store.
Despite her small stature, my mother had a larger-than-life personality. Her strength and resilience have left an indelible mark on me and everyone who knew her.
My mother's example has taught me that no matter what challenges we face, we can overcome them with hard work, determination, and a giving heart. She showed us how to be kind and generous, and her legacy reminds us to make the world a better place in any way we can.
My Mom's unbreakable spirit and selflessness continue to inspire me.
