An Act of Kindness by a Stranger

My parents died fairly recently - my father in May 2020 and my mother in December 2022.  They lived long, full lives, however, and passed when they were in their 90s.

My father was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Army occupation forces in Vienna after the war ended. During his life, he enjoyed learning and reading all he could about WWII, especially the war in Europe, and was what most would call a WWII history buff. In his later life he developed dementia, but his love of reading continued until his death.

My husband and I were fortunate to be able to take my parents several times to the Erickson Aircraft Collection located in the nearby town of Madras, Oregon. This museum has an amazing collection of vintage aircraft, especially those from the second world war. Every time we came to the museum, my elderly father had more energy and excitement and would spend time at every display, reading as much as he could about the plane he was viewing.

One time while visiting, one of the attendees asked about my father's history and when he learned he was a WWII veteran, he asked my dad if was interested in seeing some extra planes which were not on display, but in the process of being refurbished. My dad's face lit up and we were given a private tour of a section of the museum not open to the public with opportunities for my father to touch the planes and gear and really explore the aircraft. It was such a kind gesture from a younger man to an elderly veteran that gave my dad such happiness. I don't know if that younger man remembers what he did, but he made an impression on me and I will never forget his kindness.

Lynnea Miller - that is an unforgettable act of kindness.  No doubt your Dad is still smiling about that day in Heaven.  You timed the visit that day perfectly.

Thank you for participating in the December Kindness Challenge.

Hello Lynnea - I can see why this visit made an impression.   It seems to me - the young man has a habit of extending kind gestures to others.  Of course, it's only conjecture.

Your dad was the beneficiary of this act of kindness.  And obviously, that mattered to you too.  And those reading your post will benefit as well.

Lynnea Miller - what a beautiful photograph of your parents! I can only imagine how thrilled he was with that extra special surprise. My father also served in WWII. Although my mom and dad didn't live that long as your parents, I know he would have enjoyed it too or at least, reading about your dad's story.

There are instances when the kindness of the heart shines though. The act of that museum employee was appreciated by the WWII veteran and a memory he would have taken with him to the end.

Your parents sound like such wonderful people!  I am sure that young man knew exactly what he was doing for your Dad and that is what made it fun for him as well.  They likely shared some of the same passions!

Hi Lynnea your kindness post touched my heart today. My Dad was also a WWII Vet and absolutely loved talking about every detail. He, as well, had dementia and like your Dad would come alive when anyone asked him questions about his experiences in WWII.  It always touched my heart to see him happy and back to his own self during those moments. A gift and a blessing indeed.
