A Snowy Winter Day to Remember

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Eagle Ridge Realty / Signature Homes & Estates DRE# 01309169

It was the Winter of 1964-65.  The place was Chicago, Illinois.  I was a wee lad of 7 years old, and it was the first Winter that I remember when I was old enough to use a snow shovel.  I had to help my dad shovel the snow off the sidewalk and the walkway leading up to our front door.  It was a little grueling, but I also remember feeling like I was becoming one of the big kids. We had a blistering cold snap, with a lot of snow, and I remember the street was frozen over as well, and the kids in the neighborhood were ice skating on the street and the boys were playing hockey.  I lived on a cul-de-sac with 10 homes, and all the neighborhood kids were close, and we all knew our neighbors.  Our Nextdoor neighbor, the Johnsons, were older and the only household without any kids.

Once I got through helping my dad shovel our sidewalk, he MADE me shovel the Johnson's sidewalk and walkway to their front door.  This was an order that was met with much protest from me, and I just wanted to go play with the other kids.  I obviously lost the argument with my dad, and frozen tears ran down my cheeks.  I lost that battle, but gained an important lesson;  Do for others what they can't do for themselves.  It was a teachable moment my father handed to me, although i was unaware of it at the time.

So now, 6 decades later, I remember that moment as if it was yesterday.  As an adult, I realize my dad was right for telling me to help our elderly neighbors.  They were the only ones on the block without kids.  I also think my dad was probably hoping the other kids would see me doing a good deed, and maybe some lesson would be shared with them as well.  Sometimes it is the tiny acts of kindness that have the biggest impact.

Luckily, I am grateful that it was that summer when we moved to California, and I never had to pick up a snow shovel again...

Hello Gary Frimann, CRS, GRI, SRES even though you lived in Santa Clara County, I only met you through the AR community. What a blessing that was.

I know how helpful you are.  I've been the recipient of your kindness when I needed help with many things. You never hesitated to help.

Your parents were amazing role models.  Your Dad imprinted you at a young age, and that imprint remains with you today.

Thank you for participating in the December Kindness Challenge and thank you for being a kind and helpful friend.

We had elderly neighbors in our area as well and when the snow fell, we knew we had to get over there once we did our own. We didn't mind, though as they paid really well.

... great story and lessons learned when growing up!!  I remember when my Father decided I was old enough to participate in the snow removal, as well.  He had me make a snowman by rolling up the snow off the sidewalk that I was to shovel... it did remove some of the snow that I otherwise had to shovel.

Hello Gary - I am a California native but I lived for a while in a place where I experienced snow.

Lessons learned from childhood and other parts of life can remain with us a lot longer than the moment they occur.  Your post is a reminder of that - thank you for sharing this story.  It sticks and like memories a lot longer than some snowfall.

Hi Gary - what a wonderful lesson your dad shared with you.  Not everything we do has to be tied to how much we'll get paid!!!

Hi Gary I think we all got lessons that learning to help out others is a good thing and a valuable thing.  I sure did.  I'll never forget the lovely elderly couple on our block growing up in Duluth MN.  They were so sweet!  Always had  cookie for us kids and they were always trying to help out our parents by watching the kids - from afar.

I'm sure those tears stung a bit, but what a great lesson!  Your Dad was a great example of how a parent can impact a child with a life long lesson!

I too remember those days as I lived in NW IN and was a little older. So glad we have relocated to NW AZ where the worst cold temps have been around 30 degrees about zero and the snow melts in one day.
