Some Fun Thoughts on New Years Day!!

I must be bored!! I had a conversation with a colleague earlier today. During the conversation, he stated. '"there's no there, there".  This saying seem to be uttered daily to the point of sheer annoyance. So, I had to look into it.

Believe it or not, Webster's Dictionary has an explanation.  The second "there" is meant to console or comfort the listener.  Did the first person to utter the saying intend this? Who was the first person to say this and how did it catch on so quickly?

Since I am in an inquisitive mood, and having experienced a Lyft ride last evening, my next topic of consideration is Einstein's "Special Theory on Relativity".  In summary, Einstein opined that a second of time wherever you are currently may not be the same time reference elsewhere (perhaps including the universe).

I made a Lyft request...the queue indicated that the driver would arrive in five minutes. Five minutes later, the prompt indicated that the driver would arrive on 6 minutes.. Four minutes later, the prompt indicates that teh driver would arrive in 4 minutes.  All tolled (or is it told), the original 5 minute wait was 20 minutes.

Einstein was right...time is relative LOL LOL

Mmmmmh Paddy. An interesting thought. So when a space ships travels at the speed of light 20 light years to the nearest star and returns, how old will his family be when the astronaut returns. We will have to ask Einstein. A worm hole could alter the calculation of course. Thought....can a Lyft driver go through a worm hole? Happy New Year. Jeff

Jeff, his family will be long dead probably. Tis was best explained in the movie Interstestellar.   The 20 years each way is relative to the time of the spaceship location. Time is different on Mars for example. A worm hole is a different animal as it does not necessarily affect time.

Chat GPT thinks the phrase "there is no there there" is attributed to Gertrude Stein, who used it in her 1933 memoir "Everybody's Autobiography." In this context, it refers to a sense of emptiness or lack of substance in a particular situation or place. It suggests that upon closer examination, the supposed significance or substance is found to be insubstantial or non-existent.

So when you go back home, it's not really still home.

Good morning Paddy. You nailed it. I have had similar experiences. Time is indeed relative, just sometimes not in my favor. Enjoy your day.

Hello Paddy - to me, a discussion about time, may be one of the most basic conversation-starters.  Okay, add weather plus real estate (in some circles) too.  Happy New Year.
