My theme for 2024: self-care isn't selfish.

I choose a theme for each year vs. making resolutions. The beauty, as I've found, is that a theme is much less pressure than having to reach some lofty goal. It's more of a gentle reminder to shift your focus to a greater outcome, to choose a path that doesn't necessarily have an end.

My theme last year, deciding comes first, found me via a gift from a dear friend. And that is just what happened for this new year, too. My broker and friend Cherie gifted me a set of inspirational quote cards that I swap out each morning. The very first card I pulled was: self-care isn't selfish. It's a reminder that I needed (years ago!) but it couldn't have been more timely.

You see, as a single mom for well over decade and a busy Real Estate professional for almost two decades, it comes natural to tend to the needs and wants of others first. But, said needs can only be attended to fully and wholeheartedly when I show myself compassion first. Taking a regular time-out to unplug from all social media and my phone while walking with my dog, enjoying my morning coffee while reading a few pages of a good book, scheduling work-outs firmly into my daily agenda, and enjoying the bliss that I find at my monthly spa appointment have all become part of my self-care routine which I try to indulge in without guilt. I'm still adjusting, it's not always easy with a never-ending to-do list, but I recognize how important it is to just be for a moment, to tune in and to listen to what I need right now. Taking good care of myself helps me be a better mom, friend, and REALTOR®.

For my birthday last October, I gifted myself a membership to a spa. I get to choose between a massage and a custom facial each month and I can tell you that this has been one of the nicest gifts I've ever given myself. I'm still working on shutting of my brain for that hour and to not think about what I need to get done the rest of the day. But I'm getting better at it with each visit.

If you haven't found a theme or goal for this year, then join me in in this one: self-care isn't selfish. Take good care of yourself, you've earned it.

It is important to take care of yourself at any age and consistently. Good sleep, clean food, some kind of workout, meditation, walking barefoot when possible, etc. are just few examples of daily routine.

I believe, the better you feel, the more efficient and joyful you can be with your babies and loved ones.

Self-care works wonders, Inna Ivchenko, it's such a stress relief. When we feel less stressed we are in a much better position to take care of everything and everybody else. I haven't walked barefoot outside in a long time, I'll have to add that to my list.

This is very good advice for all of us.

Proper dieting has always been a self care challenge for me.

Excellent theme for this year, or any year! I totally agree, taking care of ourselves is a must, but does often come with guilt. We have to get rid of those guilty feelings!

Very timely advice as if you don't take care of yourself first, how can you take care of others?

When my kids were younger it was incredibly tough to take time for myself, but I had to if just for a few minutes. Things aren't necessarily easier now, it's a different kind of busy, but I am learning to indulge in a few moments of bliss without feeling guilty. Thanks, Leanne Smith

You cannot be at 100% efficiency if you don't take care of yourself. You cannot help anyone if you are not well and healthy.

That is very true, Ed Silva, 203-206-0754. I do have to write self-care appointments into my planner. I get so busy otherwise that I keep pushing it off. Not this year though!

Hi Andrea- I love that instead of choosing resolutions each year you choose a theme each year. Self-care is an excellent choice. We are better able to help others when we are functioning at 100%. We owe it to ourselves and others who are counting on us to take care of ourselves.

It comes naturally to put myself at the bottom of my to-do list, Kathy Streib, but I am in the process of changing that.

It's not selfish at all to care for ourselves we must do so first and foremost.  We can't help others if we are not doing well ourselves.

Happy New Year, Andrea! Isn't it crazy that we spend SO MUCH time making sure others are good that we shortchange ourselves?!

I love this non-selfish reminder and was actually talking with my daughter about this very opportunity the other day after she visited a spa.  Now add your blog and I think the universe is telling me to make it happen.  I'm in!!

So crazy, Brenda Mayette! Go for it! The monthly membership has been the best gift I've ever given myself. I look forward to it so much, the only dilemma is deciding between the facial and the massage. I did both last month as a Christmas present to myself  😊

Andrea Bedard - I can relate to just about everything you wrote. I suddenly found myself single with children in my early thirty after my spouse died. Doing something just for me was necessary; but oh, so many roadblocks, guilt, kid's needs, and so much guilt. Fast forward, kids grew up. I'm on my own. Twenty-one years ago, I stopped working in Corporate America and began my career in real estate. It is not as easy as it looks, and it is very time consuming.

Keep doing what naturally keeps you feeling good and healthy. You can do it! In between the lines, I read you are very motivated.
