In Knoxville, the post-World War II building boom first expanded to West Hills. The new demand for homes was the impetus for a number of mostly ranch-style houses to be built to accommodate the rapidly expanding middle class.

Prior to World War II, West Hills was comprised of farmland. Several families operated farms in the area. The Van Osdale family (Vanosdale road is named for them) owned a 160-acre farm. The Walker family had 100 acres for their crops. Substantial acreage was farmed by the Hickey and Kirby families, respectively. Developer Morgan Schubert purchased all the farms so homes could be constructed to meet the post-war demand.

West Hills sits primarily between Walker Springs Road on the west, Weisgarber Road to the east, and Papermill Road to the south. I-40 and I-75 run along West Hills, which makes it easy for residents to hop on the highway. Kingston Pike is a major commercial corridor which goes through West Hills.

Despite all the major thoroughfares, West Hills has maintained a largely residential character through the decades.
