Closet Organization Tips | Hang or Fold?

The season will soon be changing and it will be time to put away all of those winter clothes and bring out the warm weather outfits.

So What's In Your Closet?

Here in Central Florida, we have very few really cold weather days. So far this season I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to wear many of the cold weather outfits I was looking forward to. Oh well, that is part of the downside of living in a tropical climate I guess.

Everyone seems to be talking about Marie Kondo and her method for simplifying your life starting with your clothes. I’m sure you’ve heard about her system for organizing and decluttering? She has this way of "folding" everything.  I’m actually more of a hanging type person. I'm not the folding type...

I like to see my clothes hanging so I can put various outfits together and I like to have breathing room in my closet. I invested in tvelvet coated hangers years ago. I admit that I'm hooked. I even got my husband hooked which was not that easy.

The folding method is great for some items but not practical for me with the majority of clothing that I own.

Over the years I have found that if I put together several outfits for the week ahead of time and have them ready, it saves me a great deal of time and stress. That way I can get dressed faster. In real estate, we always need to be prepared and ready for different types of showings and  appointments at a moments notice.  I like to be prepared which helps my stress level.

One day I might need to be dressed up for a more formal meeting, next day I’m trekking through mud on a construction site. For those days I have my own hard hat and work boots. Dressier days I have my high heels and I'm ready to go and can show up in a board room meeting without a problem.

My husband likes to have his shirts arranged by type and then color.  Pants are all separated on a different rack and arranged by type and fabric.

We recently remodeled our closet and purchased components from Home Depot and I designed my closet similar to the above illustration from their catalog. I am very pleased with the results.   *Photo from Home Depot

Everyone has their own way of arranging their closets and preferences.

What’s in your closet and how do you arrange everything?

Joyce, I would like to have a closet remodel and add a linen closet, as I don't have one in my master bath.  Love this closet!
