The One Thing Helped me in my Real Estate Career!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Align Right Realty K1 Group BK3584545

The one thing that will help you survive as a Real Estate Agent in 2024!  As I reflect on my real estate journey, it amazes me that I have been able to sustain my career for 24 years. It seems like just yesterday when I was struggling to make ends meet and desperately needed money. Like many, I initially resorted to blaming others for my lack of success:

"I don't have any money,"

"I lack knowledge,"

"My broker won't help me."

However, I soon realized that I needed to take responsibility for my own success. I needed to shift my perspective and acknowledge that if anything was going to change, it would be up to me.

This realization became my daily mantra: "If it's going to happen, it's going to be up to me." It was time to stop pointing the camera at others and start looking at myself in the mirror. Being a broker, I have heard countless excuses from aspiring realtors, some of which may be valid. However, I define an excuse as something that gives you permission to stay where you are.

It was crucial for me to confront the real culprit standing in the way of my success. I urge you to watch my short video.  It was a game-changer for me when I finally realized the extent of my own responsibility. And now, it is time for you to embark on a transformative real estate journey of your own. Let's face our shortcomings, adjust our mindset, and propel ourselves to success. So, as I stand here today, 24 years later, still standing and thriving in the real estate industry, I want to share this one piece of advice that has served as the foundation of my success: take your mirror and look at yourself. Recognize that you are the one to blame and take ownership of your journey. The power to shape your real estate career lies within you. Let this be the catalyst that propels you to unprecedented heights.

Dr. Karen, I agree with you. Those who play the blame game would be far better off taking responsibility for their success.

This is a very unique business but there is no fast track to success. It is about self-promotion and getting outside our fears and doing a lot of things to show your abilities and step out of that comfort zone.

On the flip side, I need a new mirror, as I was frightened by the image I saw and dropped it.

Dr. Karen ,

You said it so succinctly! No truer words than "The power to shape your real estate career lies within you."  The blame game doesn't cut it! You have to own it, all of it, if you are going to succeed!

It's so true and yet so difficult for us to understand early on in our careers.  Having a good mentor when we get into the business helps a lot.

It is totally up to us how successful (or not) we are. If the broker isn't working and there's no chance that relationship will work, then find the right place. If the marketing isn't working, find the right marketing. Get out and talk to people! Take the initiative to try something no one else has tried.

Once we accept the responsibility of owning a business and leave the "I have a job" mentality behind, we can then realize the only way we'll survive and thrive in real estate is to own our responsibilities; training, education, asking for help, etc.

Nice post! Fun video...good info. #truth

Dr. Karen Lewis, Broker 954-2489149 Love this and great video. i am also 24 years in the business and had the same realization several years ago. Years ago I heard something very similar to your quote "If it's going to happen, it's going to be up to me."- 10 simple words, 20 simple characters "If it is to be, it is up to me!"

I think every market will have it's own areas of expertise needed to succeed. In NYC agents coming into the business with finance and accounting backgrounds have a big edge. In the role of buyer's agent, I have to create a financial profile of my buyer - creating an income statement and a balance sheet, from which I can derive the buyer's down payment, DTI, and post closing liquidity. Having a pre-approval is nice, but if the buyer is looking at co-op's - I have to prepare my buyer for far more than what a banker will offer.

Additionally, once an offer has been accepted, I review the building financials for my buyer- and alert them to any red flags. Their attorney should be doing this as well, but it's even better when they are getting multiple views that should give them a through view of the building's financial condition.

I am sure in other markets- other areas of expertise is really helpful for a new agent to have.
