I yam what I yam.

I am what I yam,

and that's all that I am.

---POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN

Today is Popeye the Sailor Man day! Out of the imagination of Elzie Crisler Segar, came Popeye the Sailor Man. The character was introduced to the public in 1929. Popeye was a beloved smart alec who appeared in Cartoons. Segar was born in Chester, Illinois in 1894, and died on October 13, 1938, in Santa Monica, California.

My dad watched Popeye the Sailor Man every weekend, and everyone in my family enjoyed watching T.V. We also took turns reading the newspaper comics. But what I loved most, was watching Popeye on Television!

Here on ActiveRain, we have a member named Bob "RealMan" Timm who has a son who creates comics. Although, I never saw Bob's son turn his characters into wisecracking cartoons, he creates good humor. I hope he becomes famous some day. From what I understand, creating comics is a rare talent.

In the Popeye's series, the love of his life was Olive Oyl. And it seemed as if Popeye was always fighting Bluto, the mean, cruel, muscular antagonist. Popeye's love for spinach, which always seemed to magically become available, gave Popeye the strength and power to protect Olive Oyl. The Cartoons made such an impression on kids, that just about every kid in America sang the same song. Because the lyrics are copyrighted, you can find them here or find them on your own to sing along!

In honor of Popeye the Sailor Man's day, let us never forget, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going, or memorize this timely quote by Gever Tulley:

"Persistence & resilience

only come from having been given

the chance to work through

difficult problems."

Lest, I forget to remind you, no matter how tough things get, never forget:

I yam what I yam.

I am what I yam,

and that's all that I am.

---POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN

I love this Patricia! Popeye The Sailor man was big in our house....I was always reminded to eat spinach to grow strong and I learned to like spinach because of it! Great tribute!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - and I love your comment! Popeye was everyone's hero!

I'm curious, did you really believe you got stronger everyday because you ate spinach?

Hello Patricia - while specifics elude me, I have a somewhat vague recollection of Popeye.  As I recall, I didn't read comic books but I remember the television cartoon, the theme song and some of the characters included on the show.  I also recall while digging through my memory bank that spinach played a role - trying to get kids to eat healthier although strengthening brain cells might have been a better choice.  Hmm...

Michael Jacobs - well, gee.... I don't know if Popeye was in the newspapers when I was growing up as a kid or not. I thought it was in the Chicago newspapers, but I could be wrong. I definitely remember watching Popeye cartoons on T.V.

Hello Patricia and I need to be eating my spinach more the old I get.  Was a fan of Popeye years ago.

Will Hamm - maybe you can dig up some family recipes that calls for spinach? That might help you and the rest of us too! We had a family friend who was Italian. She used spinach instead of Italian Sausage or Beef  when she made Lasagna, which I thought was odd. But it tasted good!

Boy do I remember Popeye Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP . Olive had a whole family and there was the hamburger loving Blimpy.

Thank you so much for mentioning Timmothy's cartoon. There is no doubt in my mind that he will be as well know as Charles Schultz and Jim Davis. He currently writes daily for one paper and a separate one for a weekly paper.

Bob "RealMan" Timm - Timmothy has quite a gift! I hope he becomes very successful with publishing his comics. As a dad, I'm sure you enjoy your children's talent! I think what you're doing by promoting his comics is so great and important for his success too.

Popeye loomed large in my life when I was a kid growing up.  He even hung around during my kids' childhood.

Myrl Jeffcoat - my kids loved to watch Popeye too! Plus, they watched limited T.V. because there was no streaming or other means to watch unless it was scheduled on T.V. Plus, I know for myself as a kid, it encouraged me to learn how to tell time on the clock on the wall!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  I loved Poppey the Sailorman I never know who created it... how interesting... find it ironic that the creator died less than 12 miles from my home, Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. - Watching Popeye was so entertaining. The characters each had their own personality. I'm glad you loved Popeye too! I thought it was also interesting to learn the creator was born and where he ended up. Chester, IL still is a very small town near the Illinois and Missouri border.

Good morning Patricia. As a kid I was never really into cartoons and comics except for Popeye. Wonder if my like for spinach comes from my like for Popeye. You brought back pleasant memories. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - Good to know you received pleasant memories of Popeye too! Watching limited T.V. gave me more time to play outdoors with my siblings and friends! I can remember us kids singing that song together too. Life was carefree and fun as we laughed more and memorized silly songs.

Hi Patricia,
Oh, I certainly remember Popeye. I do like spinach but it has never made me strong like Popeye. I totally relate to his signature quote, though: "I yam what I yam and that's all that I am."

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Carol Williams - "I yam what I yam and that's all that I am," makes a lot of sense. There were many good qualities about watching Popeye, like not letting the other guy bully someone smaller and weaker. Popeye's spinach eating with his jingle enticed many kids to eat their spinach. Plus, Popeye always wore his uniform. Like Popeye, "I yam what I yam and that's all that I am," too!

Yay, Popeye has his own day! The minute I hear that name I start singing the jingle. And the spinach making him strong was such a smart addition to the Popeye story. I bet more kids ate spinach after seeing that. Imagine if Segar used oreos instead? haha

Kat Palmiotti - Good memories! As soon as I learned it was National Popeye Day, that song came back to me too. But I had to find the lyrics. Isn't it funny that Segar could have picked anything he wanted to muscle up and get strength, but he chose spinach instead. He could have picked PEZ and carried that dispenser in his pocket, but instead he had a can of spinach. That was a brilliant idea for the creator of Popeye.
