Believe it or not, that handy space under your sink is NOT conducive to storing most items. For example, poorly sealed bottles of bleach and other potent chemicals, especially when undiluted, may leak and release fumes within this confined space. Perhaps a designated cleaning closet will better fit your needs.
Here’s a few pointers for “under-sink” storage.
Appliances and Electronics
While it might be tempting to stash a small kitchen appliance under the sink to save countertop or cabinet space, beware of potential leaks. In the event of a leak, the appliance may short circuit or, worse, pose a fire risk. It's advisable to explore creative storage solutions for appliances or declutter unused ones. Additionally, remove other electronics, such as speakers, chargers, and handheld vacuums, from under the sink.
Backstock Household Goods
Given the limited space under the sink, avoid overcrowding it with infrequently used supplies. While a Costco/Sams membership is beneficial, store excess items like hand soap, bulk trash bags, and window cleaner refills in alternative spaces, such as a nearby utility closet or a cabinet in the laundry room.
Paper Towels and Bags
While one roll of paper towels can reside under the kitchen sink, refrain from storing backups due to limited space and potential moisture. The cabinet may contain moisture, causing paper towels to become damp. Similarly, avoid placing any paper, including grocery bags, under the sink.
Extra Dish Towels and Sponges
Despite being a logical place, the cabinet under the sink may not be ideal for dish towels and sponges. Fabric towels and synthetic sponges can absorb moisture, leading to mildew formation. Consider hanging current towels inside the cabinet and store extra sponges elsewhere for easy access.
Household Tools
Metal tools left under the sink can rust due to fluctuating humidity levels. Instead, organize tools in your garage workspace to prevent rusting.
Batteries
Remove battery-powered electronic devices from under the sink, as their components may short circuit, and batteries can corrode in humid conditions. Safely store loose batteries in a cool, dry area like a junk drawer or linen closet. (And let's not forget JUNK drawers -- anyone good at keeping them tidy??)
Flammable Substances
Avoid storing flammable items like paint thinner and aerosol cans under the kitchen sink, particularly if you have a garbage disposal that generates heat. This precaution reduces the risk of a fire hazard.

Glass Items
While sturdy glass items may be stored under the sink, avoid fragile items like lightbulbs. Glass objects can tip over and shatter, creating a challenging cleanup in the confined space.
Pet Food
Refrain from storing bags of pet food under the sink, as cleaning product fumes may pose a health hazard to pets. Humidity under the sink can also lead to mold growth inside the food bag. Store pet food in an airtight container in a more suitable location.
Clutter
Remove any items that don't belong under the kitchen sink to maintain an organized and clutter-free space. Given its compact size and suboptimal storage conditions, resist the urge to overcrowd the area with unnecessary items.
