Friday Fun…Is a Hamburger a Sandwich?

Let’s have some Friday fun.  One of my favorite things to eat is a hamburger, cooked on the grill…not the kind you pick up at the drive-thru window. You know the ones with flattened patties, non-descript buns that are too big for the patty and no flavor but for the condiments.

However, in my foody mind and contrary to Merriam-Webster’s definition of a sandwich,  a burger is in a separate food category, just as is chocolate. A burger is a burger and a sandwich is a food item that has a filling between two slices of bread.

The hot dog falls into the same “sandwich or not” question. Once again, in my little world, a hot dog is in its own category.

Which brings up another question. Larry and I have always differed in our opinion about chili. When he says he had a light lunch… soup and a sandwich, his “soup” was a bowl of chili.

Once again, chili is a form of stew, not a soup!

What do you think?

Hello Kathy - you are exploring a delicious route through the cafeteria today.  Definitions and interpretations are spreading in my mind.

Kathy, Well, some may consider a hamburger as a sandwich as it consists of a filling enclosed between two pieces of bread, but I'm with you and view it as a separate category. Actually, though I never thought of this question before!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 my mind wanders more than it ponders (like Michael Jacobs ) and it has always been a question in my mind.

Bo Zivak I'm not a big sandwich eater unless it's a grilled cheese or BLT but I can't pass up a good burger.

Good morning, Kathy.
My initial thoughts were similar to Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 because it IS filling in between two pieces of bread (or buns). But, have you ever heard someone order a "burger sandwich" or a "hotdog sandwich"? Probably not! Therefore, they must be in separate categories. If so, the next question is what would that category be called?

As for chili, that, too, is in a separate category. You don't order chili soup or chili stew. You order chili.

As for a light lunch, the soup or chili would be the light lunch... not that AND a sandwich. 😂

Let's have Michael Jacobs do some additional pondering and let us know.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten and Carol Williams - come on, you know this post has a lot of food for thought.  That potential can lead to all sorts of forks in the road of thinking.  Mere morsels of mindfulness can be appetizing as well as fully satisfying.

Carol Williams I cannot tell you how many times Larry and I have gone back and forth about chili!! LOL

Anna "Banana" Kruchten if we didn't already have plans for dinner, I'd have Larry to burgers on the grill.

Michael Jacobs I would love to know if your mind ponders on over to a burger or hot dog. Or...perhaps chili?

Kathy Streib, Here is another pondertunity. I had clam chowder for lunch today. Is that a soup or in a separate category?

I believe the basics of a sandwich would be a bit of meat covered by bread. That's pretty close.

True Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 but that begs the question, is peanut butter and jelly a sandwich??

I'm with you on this one Kathy!  Hamburgers and Dogs are in their own category - as is chili.  Chili isn't a soup!!  But now I may just need to have Gary grill up burgers for dinner tonight, except we don't use buns so it's not really a sandwich.

Feb 02, 2024 07:07 AM
Kathy Streib

Anna "Banana" Kruchten we've been avoiding buns with our burgers unless Larry decides to make homemade hamburger buns.

I liked your response to Anna's comment.  Like you and Larry, I often eat hamburger patties, without buns.  I wrap them in lettuce leaves instead.

A hamburger becomes a sandwich only if put between two slices of bread, same for the hot dog, otherwise they are what you consider them to be, Kathy. And chili is more a stew. less a soup because of it's thick consistency. Now, I'm hungry! 🍔

I consider hamburgers to be in their own class, haha, but with that being said I think technically they are sandwiches since it's meat and condiments held together by two pieces of bread.

I just got done eating some fried eggs sunny side up with a bakery "Everything" Bagel...followed up by a bakery Strawberry Muffin.  I am too stuffed to even think about burgers, dogs, and chili.  I will say a grilled burger is by far better than any other form of burger.  Have a great weekend.   It is 60 degrees warmer here than 2 weeks ago but it is raining and windy...we can't seem to win as that 60 degree hike makes it only 40 degrees before windchill factored in!!

Hi Kathy:

Yep, I agree. A burger (whether beef, or ground turkey which I really like) is a burger whether on a bun or not, and NOT a sandwich. And chili is chili, not soup. I'm not a big hotdog fan but they are in a category all their own.

Jeff
