Where is the white stuff?

I LOVE the mild winter we are having in North Dakota with several days in the 40's and even record setting days in the 50's and 60's. The only snow you will see in Minot is the remains of large piles from clearing off parking lots. While a few of us love it many who live in North Dakota are very disappointed.

As you can imagine winter sports are big in North Dakota. This has been a disastrous winter for the few ski slopes we have as well as snowmobiler's, ice fishermen, skaters, and those who love to snowshoe out in remote areas.

I remember a similar winter and dealers who counted on sales of snowmobiles, snow throwers, and ice fishing equipment truly struggled to make it to the next winter... if they did.

Last year here in my part of the world we had snow from November 2nd through April. It sometimes felt like the winter would never end and the snow would never melt. This year (so far) it has been very light on the snow. We had one large storm in early January, and one week of cold, and since then it's been above average in temperatures and below average in precipitation. Next year will probably be very snowy again!

I am glad it's easy to get around and I don't have to shovel much. But all the skiers and ski slopes are unhappy. Same as your area!

Good morning Bob. Here in downtown Chicago the lack of snow is a good thing. But the farther you go from the city the lack of snow becomes a bigger disappointment. Those who like snow activities are not in a good mood this year. Maybe a quick 6 inches with a short shelf life may cheer them up. Enjoy your day.

Hello Bob, love this comic strip today.  We got 6 inches of snow yesterday and it was heavy and the sun is out today and melting it fast.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I will happily let the people in North Dakota have all the CT white fluffy stuff so they are no longer disappointed.  🤣

You paint a very accurate picture of life up North Anna "Banana" Kruchten . When Tina completes her obligation to the WI Guard I'm going where ever she does and I know it will be somewhere South.

We have been very lucky this year Endre Barath, Jr. . The Pacific winds you have been sending us has kept the polar express away for the most part this year.

Very true Bill Salvatore - East Valley . We have had snow on my Birthday in mid-May. March blizzards are very common.

I could live with that Brian England . If I move to a warmer climate I don't think I would miss snow at all.

Kat Palmiotti I always feel like the winter is never going to end, especially here blogging as people will start taking pictures of flowers in March and talking about Farmers Markets and more.

Yea I'd like to say we are done with winter Wayne Martin but I'm sure we will have at least one more big snow event before spring. That being said I've been seeing a lot of motorcycles out the last 3 weeks... they are happy!

Gee Will Hamm , had I know about that snow I would have called my sister in Thornton and rubbed it in. She likes doing the same to me when we have bad weather.

Last night, in Sacramento, we survived one of the worst windstorms I've encountered in all my years in this city.  I lost power a couple times, but SMUD (Sacramento Municiple Utility District) did a great job getting it restored.  The longest I was without electricity was less than 3 hours.  The number of trees down, and damage done, is significant. But, I dodged a bullet!

Normally I like storms Myrl Jeffcoat but when they are life threatening they are no fun. I'm glad that you are safe and that they got the power one fairly quickly.

We have barely had 2 inches of snow in the last 2 years.  I don't mind because as an agent here- we walk a lot- and once that snow turns to dirty slush and massive (sometimes deep) puddles- it makes getting around town challenging in dress clothes. It's  still a radical change from the winters of my youth where December through February it was rare to see bare ground.

2" in two years is amazing for NY isn't it Adam Feinberg ? I always thought you ended up with snow measured in feet, sometimes in a single storm.

Bob "RealMan" Timm Yeah, it's true that storms could be measured in excess of a foot. In the city, we typically don't get hit as hard due to all the heat from so many buildings. I grew up about 25 miles north of NYC- and it was funny, as you leave the city- you cross over the George Washington Bridge onto the Palisades Parkway. I grew up near Exit 11 on the Palisades- but as you are driving north- you could see a crisp divide somewhere between exits 9 and 10 on the Palisades Parkway as a big snow divide.  South of that line- and you could see very little snow- north of that line a massive amount of snow.  It was crazy how you could see such dramatic conditions along this non-visual dividing line.

BUT- even with that dividing line- it was rare to see so little snow in the city as we have in recent years. In the last 10 years or so, it's been far more common to have 1 or 2 storms of substance and some small snowfalls...but almost the entire annual snowfall was due to those one or two big storms.  When I was growing up- it was normal to have routine snow on any given day (even if it was a small amount), and that hasn't really happened much in recent years.

Hi Bob, Ice fishing gets dangerous if you get off to a warm start of winter. Do you partake?

I did when I lived in MN (land of 10000 lakes) Matt Brady . It was a lot of fun but a big part of that fun was the friends I hung with. I would never go out alone. The fish are not as active here in ND so I get bored, thus no more ice fishing for me.

Hi Bob, I did when I lived in MI. It seems when the weather was nice and you wouldn't mind just enjoying the company, we would catch a mess of fish. When it was miserable I hardly caught anything. Now there is not too much ice fishing in San Diego.

I'm in Minnesota and am definitely missing snow. I love the brightness of the white and the sun glistening and making it sparkle. I have always loved winter and the snow, and recently realized I'm depressed not having it this year.

I don't know if there is anything more beautiful then the sun shining down on a powdery blanket of snow Beth Paterson but there are so many winter days where we don't see the sun and that gets me depressed. I've thought about moving about two States South so I can still enjoy 4 seasons but a little less winter then I get now.

I get it, but I have found it will be dreary when it snows but then afterwards the sun comes out. This year it's been dreary with no snow for too long. The warmer temps are giving me spring fever (some of my plants too because their noses are poking up) but nothing I can do in my gardens. I do love the 4 seasons for sure. 😚
